Still pretty new to running my own group and learning a lot of this the hard way. Curious what the veterans here would go back and tell themselves on day one, something you only figured out after a few months in. Trying to skip a few mistakes if I can.

Free vs. paid — how did you know it was the right time?

Running a free community right now, but I've already started uploading some gated/paid content inside it just to test the waters before committing to a full paid tier. For those who've made that jump — what signaled it was time to go fully paid? A member-count threshold, seeing people actually engage with the gated stuff, something else?

That's a great gut-check, thank you. Asking current members directly is honestly probably a better signal than anything I'd guess on my own. I'm going to try that before assuming what a paid tier should even include. The community itself is free, it's really just some specific content inside that's gated/paid. So it's less "will founding members pay later" and more figuring out what belongs on the free side vs. what's worth charging for as we go.

The one that really stood out to me was being able to gate specific modules instead of the whole course, that's almost exactly what I've been doing manually in my own group. Having it built in properly means I can finally let people test the free content, get real value from it, and then choose to unlock the deeper stuff when they're ready, instead of an all-or-nothing paywall that might scare newer members off before they've seen what it's actually worth.

Just finished the video from Goose on "how to build a business that you don't hate"

And here are my main takeaways @Mindy Molein! So, first of all, you want to have a North Star, which is basically your long-term goal. You shouldn't get distracted by things that are fun in the short term but don't benefit in the long term. He gave an example of you building your business and being the entrepreneur of the business, trying to handle it all, and then you blow up and make 100K a month. He gave two examples of some people changing everything since they need to adapt to them making so much new money. The other ones just keep doing what's already working and try to only reduce their work and hire other people, for example, people that are doing sales for them to get more leverage and to be able to focus on fewer things but way deeper. If something is working, we should do more of that then better, and only then we should do new stuff. We shouldn't get caught by shiny objects that are only beneficial in the short term. If, for example, we want to build an app for our company in the short term, you could go and focus on that yourself, but that will cost a lot of time and energy that you can't put towards your business anymore. Hiring somebody to do that will be the long-term better option in that case. He also mentioned that you want to be around people that share your same passion.

Ha, fair question! Honestly, making money isn't the main goal right now — it started more out of wanting to share what I've learned with people going through the same stuff I was, since I didn't have that when I was figuring things out myself. We're actually running workshops and putting together some courses now too, so there's more structure to it than just conversation. But the real goal is just helping people get further, faster, than I did on my own. If it grows into something bigger down the line, great — but that's a bonus, not the point.
