New podcast is out!
Hi all, here’s our latest podcast- perhaps one of the most provocative one’s I’ve done in a while. Would love to hear your thoughts/ideas on it! https://breakingtheparadigm.org/p/the-montessori-mafia-breaking-down?r=39lb48&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=audio-player
I love the work being done to make Montessori more accesible and adapting it keeping the principles and using observation as a guiding compass to adjust our practice and the prepared environment to what the children in our care need.
Self-Directed Education- A Provocation...
This piece from Dr. Peter Gray is fascinating- it makes me wonder about how free (or coercive) our Montessori environments might be. https://petergray.substack.com/p/differences-between-self-directed Thoughts?
It was an interesting reading as I didn't know the difference between progressive education and SDL. I wouldn't call coercive to "train" children from a young age to develop autonomy, independence, higher degrees of concentration which they can use to self-direct their learning within the context of the prepared environment. I think that the Montessori classroom is a carefully designed learning environment, which can also be found through SDL, but it seems to me that it would require a rich environment and facilitating adult, which is what Montessori provides. I agree with what Anjum notes about considering the planes of development for the preparation of the environment, rather than leaving it to chance. Both approaches trust in the child, but the Montessori curriculum makes sense to me in terms of the relevance it has for human development.
Welcome Paradigm Breakers- Tell us about yourself!
If you're here, you're probably tired of the traditional system and are ready to question what everyone else takes for granted. This is where we build the coalition of educators who refuse to accept "that's just how education works." Let's start with introductions that matter: Your Education Origin Story Tell us: - What moment made you realize something fundamental was wrong with traditional education? - When did you first catch a glimpse of what education could be when it truly serves human development? - What unspoken norm in education drives you absolutely crazy? - What transformation are you hoping to create in your classroom, school, or community? What I hope this community becomes: A coalition of paradigm breakers who co-create the tools, frameworks, and courage needed to prove that transformational education isn't just possible—it's inevitable when enough of us work together. Drop your story below! We're not just chatting online- we're building a movement. And every movement starts with brave individuals willing to share their truth and vision for something better. Let's revolutionize education together! Feel free to add new topics, ask questions, share resources, celebrations, and areas for growth. This is OUR platform for the dialogues that will break the paradigm!
Growing up in traditional education and seeing the contrast of how my children developed in Montessori education was impactful. I believe it was preventive for them and has been restorative for me. I first came to Montessori as L2 specialist. Doing a research into SLA in Children's House was my initial Montessori training which lead to doing my 3-6 Diploma. Thinking we are providing a good start in life by providing chaotic environments, burnout teachers in an in-cohesive educational framework drives me crazy and not finding a way out makes me very sad. I would like for Montessori (and the like) to be an alternative parents could choose without it having to be private. I hope this community becomes a space for hope. I want to better understand how transformation could look like in my current space of influence and what could actually create change for the children in my area.
