I saw something recently that made a lot of sense to me. The idea was basically that motivation does not always come before you start something. A lot of the time, motivation is created AFTER you start. And the more I think about it, the more I think that might be true, especially when it comes to starting an online community. I think a lot of us wait because we’re expecting to wake up one day and suddenly feel ready. We imagine there will be this clear moment where the idea feels complete, the name feels perfect, the branding feels right, the classroom makes sense, and we finally feel confident enough to put it out there. But maybe that is the wrong way around. Maybe the confidence does not come from thinking about the idea for longer, it comes from seeing it become real. Because once you create the community, even if it is basic, you suddenly have something to work with. You have somewhere to send people. You have a reason to make a post. You have a place where conversations can happen. You have something that can be improved, shaped, simplified, explained, renamed, repositioned, and built around. Before that, it is just an idea floating around in your head. And ideas in your head can feel really heavy, because there is nothing to respond to. You can keep questioning it forever. Is this the right niche? Would people pay for this? What should I call it? What should I post? What if nobody joins? What if I start and then realise I should have done it differently? But once you start, even in a small way, the questions become easier to answer because they are no longer just theoretical. You post something and see what people respond to. You invite someone and hear what they ask. You explain the community out loud and realise what sounds clear and what sounds confusing. You add a lesson and notice what still needs to be explained. You get one comment, one question, one bit of feedback, and suddenly the next step is not as blurry as it was before. That is where I think motivation starts to build, from giving yourself some movement.
