Diesel High Pressure Fuel Pump Question.
In the workshop we have 3 different manufacturer vehicles with a diesel fuel problem. Two have been fuelled with Petrol. I am trying to find out information, however I having difficulty finding the answer. On the high pressure fuel pump at the engine, remove the tank return pipe and insert a pipe to a collection container. Turn on the ignition, the tank pump primes and stops when the pressure reaches about 4-5bar at the fuel supply port of the high pressure pump. Am I right in saying there should be no diesel going back to the tank from the high pressure pump until the engine is cranked? What is the expected resistance of the return valve solenoid / pressure regulator in the high pressure pump? Using Alldata and it is not mentioned on the 3 vehicles.

@Roger Boyle I am not the best on these systems but if you look at the two pictures this is the main difference I know about. Here is a brief description obviously rewritten by ChatGPT to help make sense of my waffle. On common-rail diesels, rail pressure is mainly controlled in two different ways, and some systems actually use a combination of both. 1. Inlet-metered / quantity-controlled system Here the control valve is on the low-pressure/inlet side of the high-pressure pump. You’ll see names such as SCV (Suction Control Valve), IMV (Inlet Metering Valve), fuel metering valve or quantity control valve. The basic flow is: Tank → low-pressure supply → metering valve → HP pump → rail → injectors The ECU effectively says: “I only need this much high-pressure fuel, so only allow this much fuel into the pumping chambers.” If the rail pressure is too low, the ECU commands the metering system to increase pump delivery. If rail pressure is too high, it reduces the quantity entering the high-pressure pumping elements. This is generally more efficient because the pump isn’t continually compressing a large excess quantity of fuel just to dump it again. 2. Outlet/rail pressure-regulated system The other arrangement allows the high-pressure pump to produce more fuel flow than the engine actually requires, and rail pressure is controlled by allowing excess high-pressure fuel to escape through a pressure control/regulating valve. Conceptually: Tank → HP pump → rail → injectors ↓ pressure control valve → return So instead of controlling primarily how much fuel gets compressed, you’re controlling how much of the compressed fuel is allowed to remain in the high-pressure circuit. If rail pressure rises above the ECU’s target, the regulator opens further and releases more fuel to the return side. If pressure is too low, it restricts that escape path.

Got a bit of head scratcher with water in fuel fault code putting service light on . Code in vehicle ecu is p2264 Sensor circuit open , Looking information on Bosch it’s is linked to fuel heater on fuel filter ( found 25 amp fuse blown on this circuit) fixed no difference The three wire water in fuel sensor isn’t fitted to this vehicle just pushed into blank We got battery voltage earth and around 11 odd volts on third wire . hi everyone, just sitting down with a cup of tea on my sunday off watching the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVWBGFjwL2M what amazing testing steps in this video for me 1. using crocodile clips to hold on to the wires to test which i never thought of doing and always going back and forth between wiring diagram and connector plug 2. could of easily been caught out with the ecu fault amazing 3. you need different platforms like hgs, alldata, autodata for help with wiring diagrams 4. Do i get the bulb load testers i joined 1 day before the video was posted lol.

@Shah Islam glad you enjoyed the video, yes everyone is getting the load cages over the next few weeks, just need to get postage sorted out but im looking into that this week, will be asking for address over the next few weeks
