OK, Jeep people — quick test. You're cruising, another Jeep passes. What do you do? If your hand didn't just twitch reading that, let's help you get to that place. 😂 Here's the move: two fingers, off the top of your steering wheel, up in a V. Not necessarily a full wave — a V. That's the Jeep wave. The story goes back to WWII. Soldiers in Willys MBs used hand signals to spot friendly vehicles fast. War ends, Jeeps go civilian, vets keep the habit — and decades later we're all still doing it in a Costco parking lot. (Origin story's more legend than documented fact, but nobody's mad about it.) Why two fingers and not a full hand? Simple — you don't take your whole hand off the wheel on a washboard road. The V is the efficient version. Function became the culture. With all that in mind, there's nothing wrong with giving that enthusiastic full-hand wave either! It's fun. It's culture. It's respect. It's a Jeep thing, baby! The unwritten rules: ✌️ You ALWAYS wave back. No exceptions. Ever. ✌️ Newer or stock rig waves first to the older or more built one. ✌️ Ignore the wave? Everyone at the next Jeep meet will know. Stock YJ or a built JL sitting on 37s — doesn't matter. Same two fingers. Same message: we both picked the weird, impractical, amazing vehicle on purpose. Will you commit to the Jeep wave?

Airing Back Up: The Other Half of Airing Down
You aired down, ran the trail, and had a good day. Now what's putting that air back in before you hit the highway? A previous post covered the deflators and gauges worth your money. This one covers the tool that finishes the job, because airing down is only half a process — and the second half is the half that gets you home. Fifteen to eighteen PSI is built for dirt at trail speed. Put that same tire on pavement at highway speed and it flexes far more than it was designed to, builds heat, wears the outside edges, and leaves your steering feeling vague right when you need it most. Is that worth the five minutes you saved by not airing up at the trailhead? There are three ways people solve this. 1. A 12V portable compressor This is where nearly everyone starts. It lives in a bag in the back, plugs into a 12V socket or clamps straight onto the battery, and comes out when you need it. Ballpark $40 to $250 USD ($55 to $350 CAD). The cheap end is slow — figure 20 to 25 minutes to bring a set of 35s from trail pressure back to street pressure. Step up one tier and that drops to somewhere around 9 to 12 minutes to air up all your tires. There are a lot of different models and price points, and we'll get deeper into those in a future post. 1. An onboard compressor Usually mounted under the hood permanently and switched from inside the vehicle. Roughly $250 to $600+ USD ($350 to $850 CAD) before install. It'll do a full set in 3 to 5 minutes, and it runs air lockers and air tools if you ever add them. It's also more compressor than most people need in their first season. 1. A CO2 tank Stored pressure instead of a motor. No amp draw, no cooldown, no noise, and the fastest of the three at roughly 2 to 3 minutes for a set. The catch is that it's finite. When it runs empty you're finding a shop to refill it, or bringing out a compressor anyway. The two specs that actually decide it CFM is how much air it moves per minute — the number that decides whether you're standing there for five minutes or twenty-five. A rough guide: 1.5+ CFM handles tires around 33 inches, 2.5+ covers 35s to 37s, and 4+ is for 40s or running air tools. Most beginner Jeeps sit at the bottom of that list.

4H vs 4L: Do You Know Which One to Grab?
Ever sat looking at that transfer case lever in your Jeep — 2H, 4H, 4L — and wondered which one you're actually supposed to be in? You're not alone. It's one of the first things that trips people up once a Jeep leaves pavement. 4H is four-wheel drive high, where power goes to both the front and rear wheels, which gives your Jeep more traction and stability on rough ground — better traction than 2H in snow and mud, and better control on washboard or bumpy side roads. This is the mode for soft and slick surfaces — mud, snow, sand, and ice. It's also for going up or down hills where traction is reduced and keeping your momentum up is important. 4L stands for low-range four-wheel drive. When you switch into it, your Jeep's gearing changes, which means your driving speed needs to be reduced, but you get an increase in torque and power. This is fantastic for tackling steep hills, loose terrain, and rough areas where you want better control over how fast you go down hills or over uneven ground. That's exactly what you need for slow, controlled driving: steep climbs, rocky sections, and anywhere crawling is better than speeding up. The low speeds are intentional. Your owner's manual will tell you the top speed for 4L, which is designed for a crawling pace, not a driving pace. Just a heads-up: keep an eye on your RPMs on the dashboard if you're driving in 4L. If you find yourself needing more speed than that, it might be time to switch back to 4H. So which one do you reach for first? I have found the simplest habit is this: start in 4H. If you're not getting the traction you need, slow down and drop into 4L. And either way, don't run 4L any longer than you have to. In either 4L or 4H, you may notice some binding or rough steering when turning sharply — this is normal. It isn't damaging your vehicle, but it's also not recommended unless it's unavoidable. If you feel it happening, reduce how sharply you're turning, or, if it's safe to do so, put your Jeep back into 2H while making that sharp turn. Remember, every mode has its job and its practical uses — with a little demonstration and some practice, you've got this.

Standing in front of a wall of gauges and deflators online, how do you actually know which one is worth your money? Last post we covered the concepts — valve core tools, screw-on deflators, analog versus digital versus pen gauges. This one's the buyer's list: six types beginners actually reach for, how each one works, what it typically runs, and what it's best for. Here's the split before we get into specifics. Manual tools mean you're watching a gauge and controlling the release yourself. Automatic ones mean you set a target once and walk away while it does the work. Neither route is wrong — it comes down to how hands-on you want to be, and how much you're willing to spend to skip a step. I listed these from the one I'd buy first down to the one I'd skip. Prices move around with sales, so treat these as ballpark, not gospel — ranges below are in US dollars with Canadian in brackets. #1 — Screw-On Deflator with a Built-In Gauge — Best All-Around — My Personal Recommendation How it works: Threads onto the valve stem in place of the cap, then safely pulls the valve core, opening a wider air path than the core alone would allow. The attached gauge shows live PSI as it drops. Typical price: $30–$55 USD ($40–$80 CAD) Good for: One tool doing two jobs. In my opinion, this is where a beginner's money goes furthest — you deflate and check pressure with the same tool, and there's nothing extra to forget at home. #2 — Standalone Analog Dial Gauge — Cost-Effective and Reliable How it works: Press the gauge onto the valve stem and read the number. Or use the knob to press against the valve core and release air. Typical price: $10–$45 USD ($14–$65 CAD), depending on build quality Good for: No batteries to die on you mid-trail. A solid dial gauge earns its spot in the glovebox even if your main tool is something fancier. #3 — Automatic Screw-On Deflators — Great for Airing Down Consistently How it works: Twist the top to set your target PSI once, thread it onto the valve stem, and a spring-loaded valve inside seals itself shut the instant the tire hits that pressure.

Last post we covered how much to air down — now how do you actually get there without wasting ten minutes a tire? Deflators come in a few flavors. The cheapest option is a valve core removal tool — you unscrew the valve core itself and let air out, then thread it back in. It works, but it's slow, and it's easy to lose the tiny core in the dirt. Most people move to a screw-on deflator instead: thread it onto the valve stem and it dumps air fast without touching the core. Some are fixed-rate, some let you dial in a target PSI so you know exactly when to stop. In my opinion, the adjustable ones are worth the extra few dollars if you're airing down often. For gauges, you've basically got three options: analog dial gauges (cheap, no batteries, but they can drift out of accuracy over time), digital gauges (precise and easy to read, but need a battery), and pen-style gauges (compact, decent as a glovebox backup, less precise than the other two). Whatever you pick, check it against a known-accurate gauge once in a while — one that's off by three or four PSI will throw off everything downstream. And that dash readout — yes, a lot of Jeeps show tire pressure right on the screen. Handy for a quick glance, but is it precise enough to trust down to the exact PSI? Not really. It usually updates slowly, so treat it as a rough check, not your primary tool. We'll dig into that one properly in a future post. If you're airing down regularly, a gauge you trust and a deflator that matches how often you actually do this will save you more time than almost anything else in your rig.
