Today, I had the opportunity to sit down with Astor, our Student of the Month, for a special one-on-one Coffee Date! 🥹 We celebrated the commitment and effort he has been putting into his Spanish, and we talked about something many language learners experience: knowing more Spanish than you’re able to use when it’s time to speak. After years of practicing with Duolingo, he has become great at recognizing Spanish and finding the correct answer, BUT during real conversations, he still catches himself translating his thoughts before speaking. And here was our biggest takeaway: ✨ You don’t need to translate your complete, sophisticated English thought into Spanish. Use the Spanish you already know to communicate the same idea (even if that means using shorter and simpler sentences) We also practiced: 🗣️ Double checking is TOTALLY FINE!! solo para confirmar... es sopa de pollo, cierto? 🧩 Breaking one complicated thought into smaller sentences ⏳ Using filler words like “Pues…,” “A ver…,” “Creo que…” and “La verdad es que…” to gain thinking time 💜 Focusing on communication instead of perfection Remember: understanding Spanish and producing it spontaneously are two different skills. If you want to speak more naturally, you have to practice retrieving the language, not only recognizing the correct answer. Congratulations again, @Astor Forbes ! 🥳 Thank you for your honesty, your commitment and such a lovely Coffee Date. We’re so proud to have you in this community! 💜☕️ Can anyone else relate to translating everything in their head before speaking? 👀
