To advertise or not to advertise? That is the question
Good morning everyone I have been tinkering quite heavily with Meta ads and Google ads and I would love to know about anybody's experience if they have any? I'm contemplating advertising my group sessions and marketing is haaard! Be great to share experiences if applicable - my Mock Prep course is making sales but quite slowly and I did have a late burst with the last one I ran but it's still scary! :) Happy Friday Rob
Welcome!
Thank you to our new members and my apologies for the delay in some content. I have been extremely busy evaluating the 1-2-1 business and I've decided that group sessions are the way to go! I'm looking to grow my group sessions as now, each new member brings another £10 to the 'hourly rate' with no extra admin. I believe that many people can improve the efficiency of the admin with the use of AI (incrementally not going the whole hog straight away) and provide a better service which can justify increasing prices should you wish to. This isn't a flex at all, I just want to share with you what a normal guy did in 6 months of working on this solidly using the strategies within my videos. My average rate per 50 minute session has more than doubled and I'm still getting near to 100% conversion rates on conversations with leads that come my way. Because I'm quoting significantly higher figures, people assume you're a better tutor (which hopefully you are!) and there's still room to drop your figure slightly if you want to make a sale and fill your remaining sessions. However, with a group there is no cap. I'm doing the sessions almost like a 'stream' experience with students interacting via the chat so if you can get a decent number in there, it will overtake whatever you feel you can charge for 1-2-1 and you can start paring that back or just keep growing your revenue. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will do my best to get back to you ASAP. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Rob

@Anika Tay that's a really interesting topic because for me, I've always thought that the labels (whilst essential for funding and actually getting support) are so broad that we can often put them in a box which doesn't necessarily match their needs 100%. In 1-2-1 sessions, I will try to get them to reflect on what their brain is telling them (metacognition) when answering questions correctly and incorrectly. Their insights for me, are often way more powerful than a diagnosis because you understand how their symptoms present for them. Once you can relate and adapt your sessions around that, they will make significant progress in my experience. Over time, I've tried to do this in the classroom and during tuition and I think that applying that one technique to as many students as possible means you just try to meet needs as opposed to them having a 'difficulty' or 'disability'. Hope that helps!

@Anika Tay It is so broad and nuanced that I find students will make progress when they feel safe and understood. If you can crack that, you will see a huge shift in confidence which I believe will help overcome virtually any difficulty :) Happy Friday!
What Makes a Maths Resource Actually Useful?
One thing I’ve noticed about teaching maths is that creating good resources can take almost as much thought as planning the lesson itself. A worksheet might look great, but if the questions aren’t well matched to the specification, don’t provide enough variety, or don’t help students understand their mistakes, it may not have the impact we hoped for. For tutors teaching GCSE or IGCSE maths, I’m curious: What do you look for when deciding whether a maths resource is genuinely worth using with your students? Is it accuracy, question variety, difficulty progression, time saved, exam relevance, or something else? And what’s one resource or tool you’ve found that has genuinely made your tutoring easier?

That's a great question. I've always found that creating resources myself took ages because of the formatting and even now with AI, the questions themselves can be sketchy at the best of times. On my Bow Tie Maths platform, I have tried to code questions that match the GCSE and IGCSE curriculum as closely as I could (this was before vibe coding was a thing!). These are based on past paper questions and I have made it create unlimited variants around the same themes and styles. I currently have a couple of teachers piloting the teacher section where you can put questions up on the board (you can filter them too eg completing the square where the coefficient of a is 1), write your responses on the platform and show the answers. If you're interested in giving it a go for free, then please register, let me know when done and I'll give you a free upgrade! You can also look at the students section where the questions live. It grades students against the exam board data and a machine learning algorithm predicts their final GCSE grade once they've completed a decent number of topics. The Vault is pretty cool too (I think! LOL). You can see the connections between the topics, which knowledge may be required/missing if a topic is difficult as well as past paper questions individually rendered by topic for ease of use to find. Please give it a try and let me know how you get on! https://www.bowtieteacher.co.uk/vault

Look at your phone contacts, Facebook friends and email contacts and you will probably have a couple hundred warm leads who you can contact - it's super difficult but give it a go with 10 to start with and you'll find it gets much easier!!

@Margaret Farrell good luck, I literally did ten at a time - you'll be surprised how many people need tutoring!
Social Proof
Hello everyone and welcome to our new members. This is just a quick post talking about social proof and how important it is to get some social proof in order to gain new clients. I created a Google business profile for free and on that profile you can request reviews and testimonials from your current and past clients. This has been something really useful for me when getting new clients because I can just point them to my reviews or you could do your reviews on a Facebook page. That can help sway them to work with you in the future. I used to underestimate the power of a decent review and now I see that actually it's one of the most useful things you can do to convert your leads into paying clients. You can Google Bow Tie Teacher and see the sorts of things people write about me if you wish; I used to find it extremely difficult to ask for reviews especially if people ignore it after a couple of times. But I'm growing a thicker skin as time goes by and am learning not to take it so personally, especially when you've done so much to help their child progress. So give it a go! Reach out to your WhatsApp contacts, your email contacts and whoever else has worked with you in the past and ask them for some positive words!! Have a great day, Rob

@Margaret Farrell if you check in on your old student and ask how they're going. You remember tutoring them and look back on those sessions fondly etc etc. Wondering if they could help you out by giving a positive review as it would really support the growth of your business. Most people will say yes x
