Left my pre compost alone for awhile
I was struggling trying to get my first attempt at pre compost to a high temperature and never got over 105. I did two heat cycle attempts and I left it alone for a few weeks and checked it today. At first glance I am definitely growing something in the tote. Not sure what all of it is but it is interesting. Temperature is at 80 degrees. There is no smell that my 84 year old nose can detect so I guess that is a good sign. Any views on whether this is good enough to start adding some worms to it after I locate some of it in a smaller bin? I still haven’t pulled the plug on ordering some worms but I’m getting close
Left my pre compost alone for awhile
Don’t see my post
The other day I posted a question in the pre compost section with a video and photo of what appeared to be jumping larvae in my first attempt at pre composting. I cannot find the post. Is there any reason it would not be published? It is quite perplexing and would like some help identifying them.

Revisited the bin yesterday. All the little white larvae are no longer alive. I’m going to attempt to restart the process with some alfalfa pellets and rainwater. I used tap water directly last time and did not give it time for the chlorine to dissipate. A learning process.

I visited the pre compost bin today. Was going to add the ground alfalfa pellets with some additional cardboard. Surprisingly there is no real smell that I can detect. Definitely no coffee order at all. It looks good and is still moist, especially on the bottom where I hear the sponge sound when squeezing. The top was still moist but crumbly. The temperature was 78 degrees. So will add the crushed alfalfa, shredded cardboard and vegetable water and see what happens I took a video of the top and I know Jayne from rocking worms would be excited to see that “stuff” in the right front. The experiment continues. I’m assuming this is probably good enough but want to try one more cycle. If it works, then I take the plunge and order some worms. By the way, does anyone know what happened to Jayne? No updated videos and website is gone.
Pre-Compost
Okay so maybe I did something wrong, but my Pre Compost never reached over 86°F My mixture 3 parts shredded cardboard 1 part blended up food scraps 1/2 part of coffee grounds (used) Please let me know if that is correct. If it isn't, do I need to start over or just add?

Excellent advice here. I just ordered a bag of alfalfa pellets and will see if that helps me get my batch temperature up again. I used tap water for my fluid without realizing the chlorine conundrum. I have several gallons of rainwater and will use that with the alfalfa pellets to try again. Do you grind the alfalfa pellets or just add them with water?

@Rick Redding thanks. We had a recent deluge here in MA as we got 8 inches of rain so I do have plenty of rain water for now. One other thing. I run a dehumidifier in the basement during the summer time. It just dawned on me that I was throwing away 4 gallons of clean water daily so I assume that it is fine to use at any time in the worm process requiring water.
Step by Step Red Wiggler Breeder Bin
This is the most detailed video I’ve made to date on how I run my breeder bins! It’s hard to cover everything but I tried to show my process. Everyone does it differently, and I’m not saying this is the only way to do it! This is just how I do it, and it’s worked very well for me 😊
