Google's "Shopping Agent" Isn't Built for You. It's Built to Cut Every Brand Out.
Google wants you to believe its new shopping agents are a convenience feature. Read the actual mechanics and it looks a lot more like Google quietly becoming the only customer relationship that matters. Here's what's rolling out right now. Google's agentic checkout lets you track a price, and when it hits your target, an AI agent completes the purchase automatically through Google Pay, no clicking required beyond one confirmation. New voice agents can call stores directly to check inventory on your behalf. The Universal Commerce Protocol, backed by Walmart, Shopify, Etsy, and Target, standardizes how agents talk to merchants across the entire shopping journey, from discovery to payment. Google's own team calls this the "agentic commerce era." Here's the detail that should worry every retailer reading this, not just excite them. In Google's own accompanying analysis for brands, the quiet admission is right there: Google understands the shopper in higher resolution than the brand actually selling the product. For years, brands built competitive advantage through their own email lists, apps, and loyalty programs, direct access to their own customers. Agentic checkout routes that entire relationship through Google instead. The retailer still fulfills the order. Google owns the conversation, the intent data, and increasingly, the decision itself. My controversial take: this isn't Google helping you shop faster. It's Google positioning itself as the toll booth between every brand on earth and the customers those brands spent years earning.
