Welcome @Marama Elizabeth
Early Understanding
One thing that most folks encounter as they start to practice permaculture is a feeling of being overwhelmed with information. Principles, cycles, patterns, water, earthworks, soil food webs, mycology, natural relationships, and all the other aspects can seem daunting and even scary. This leaves most afraid of getting it wrong and slows or even prevents movement forward. I felt the same way starting out. I felt like I had to do it all right away, the right way, or I would mess it all up and have to start over. What I've learned is that all those feelings are important and are just part of the process. They can either fuel momentum or stall out. What we have to consider is that everything begins and everything ends. I teach to start small so that the mistakes that are made are small. This ensures that we build understanding and allows room for experimentation along the way. Remember that these lessons are a framework, not dogma. Nature abides by it's own rules and follows it's own time line. To work with nature is to work within it's capacity.

I love this insight – it applies to everything. In the past, feeling overwhelmed and the desire to start off ‘perfectly’ right away really held me back. Now I love the little experiments that help me make progress. It’s about unlearning an old way of thinking and aligning our thoughts and actions with the way nature works. That’s where the magic lies!

As we navigate this path of understanding we'll find that the 10,000 things aren't only connected but are stacked for functionality. They don't just hold hands but pass energy between them. This energy transfer is what makes it all work. The river picks up sediment, debris, seeds, nutrients, and carries them from a source to begin a new transfer down stream, where they will benefit that system. The return comes from the wind, rain, animals, birds, ect. How can you participate in this energy transfer?

That is what fascinates me most of all about permaculture and complex systems. Paradoxically, nature increases the complexity of an ecosystem by creating ever more effective functions. As a result, energy flows ever more smoothly, and so the system becomes increasingly simple and agile; far more is achieved with less energy and effort.
