Anyone heard Costel Nitescu?
He is a great Romanian violinist based in Paris. He’s a real interesting player in the “gypsy jazz” world. That style is really a modern interpretation of Django and Stephane’s style, kept alive mainly in the Sinti/Manouche communities in Europe. I would say that the style of music is treated quite like folk music (certainly by guitarists) in terms of the improvisational language, the way of learning and the repertoire but at the end of the day it’s jazz! Violinists like Costel have a distinct swing feel and style of playing, just as close to other Sinti/Manouche and Romani fiddles styles as it is to Grappelli’s playing in my opinion.

He really swings! Been following him for quite a while now and learned a couple licks on Coquette. Cool stuff!

Peter - Bluegrass background and started gypsy jazz/swing several years ago. I've previously been a member of Matt's community as he has great stuff. I just opened a nonprofit music school in Bend Oregon. I took some time off musically over the last few years, so recently have started working on improving my skills personally and for teaching workshops and lessons. www.newearthworkshop.org. Favorite fiddlers include Joe Venuti, Costel Nitescu and others of course. Looking forward to using Matt's instruction and community.
New strings....?
When do people change strings? Just when they snap? Otherwise it feels like a pretty random choice/ difficult judgement to decide when the sound is my technique or due to the ' hard wear'

I use Vison Heavy, moderately priced compared to some. I usually change the A string 3 times or so when it unravels before I change the whole set. They seem to last a long time. Maybe it's my violin, but I haven't really seen the sound benefit of more expensive strings. Justin Branum was using those strings a few years ago; I think he is using different strings now.
