What would you tell your 1L self?
OK folks, we are getting ready to launch a program for the incoming 1L's to help bridge gaps in the onboarding and orientation process of some law schools. For our existing members, we encourage you to join in the fun as a refresher and to pick up some skills you may have missed or can improve. However, before we finalize things I want to check in with each of you to see what you wish you knew BEFORE you started law school. How could your experience in those first few weeks have been improved? How could your experience in the 1st semester been improved? Check out this video on things to do to prepare for law school and create success.

I would like to add there is a $150 fee that 1L students need to pay towards the State Bar within 90 days of them becoming a law student. Just a small detail that most students forget due to the overwhelming nature of 1L.

Bar Results & Scoring
To the February bar takers that passed the exam, congratulations! Everyone in this community knows the work dedication. It took to get that result. To the February bar takers that did not pass the exam, I am so sorry. I know how hard you worked and hoped for different results. Allow yourself to feel whatever you need to feel and then immediately develop a plan of how you’re gonna get past the next exam. To help, Belyn is currently uploading all past CA bar essays in our classroom! I’ll make sure to do weekly MBE practice here too! I would like to mention one thing. I overheard a lot of people talking about getting 65 on an essay. Although that is not a bad score on an essay, I want you all to realize it’s also not a passing score. If you’re averaging 65 that will not get you the scaled written score that you need to pass the exam. Generally, you need a 67% average to get to the current 1390 cut score of the California bar exam. So that means you need to target an average score of 70 not 65 to ensure you pass.. If anybody has questions or needs me to do a webinar explaining our scores and how it works, and how it’s calculated, at least here in California, lmk! #wedonttrywedo #barpassers

Exploring the Complex Relationship Between Law and Justice Dilemmas at the Intersection of Law and Morality • Can a law that is democratically enacted still be fundamentally unjust, and if so, what gives judges or citizens the moral authority to resist it? • Should justice prioritize truth, fairness, or social stability when those three values cannot all be achieved at the same time? • If punishment cannot undo the harm suffered by a victim, what is its true philosophical purpose: retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, or something else? • Is the legitimacy of a legal system determined by its procedures (the rule of law) or by the moral outcomes it produces, and what happens when those two conflict? • If artificial intelligence eventually applies legal rules more consistently than human judges, should society accept decisions that are more predictable but potentially less compassionate? The Question of Loyalty When Law and Justice Conflict • When law and justice diverge, which deserves our loyalty—and who has the legitimate authority to decide when that divergence has become intolerable? Foundational Legal and Philosophical Concepts • no simple answer and naturally leads into discussions of H.L.A. Hart, Ronald Dworkin, John Rawls, Lon L. Fuller, legal positivism, natural law, constitutionalism, civil disobedience, and the rule of law.

Interesting thought. Reminds me of the story of the Greek story, "Antigone" (whether to uphold the laws of man or the laws of god/morality). Personally, I believe, in the grand scheme of things, that justice and laws were created to keep a society from falling into disorder. Imagine if "street justice" was the way, or we live in a world were its "an eye for an eye". It would be chaos at a subjective level. Yes, the people's adherence to the law is strengthened by the law's effectiveness. And yes, we ought to strive to have effective laws in order for society reasonably follow. As you pointed out, "criminal" laws should have in balance: retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation. However, have you considered the history behind these laws and how it is that the US nation, or its states, has gotten to this point? These laws aren't enacted by one person, nor in a vacuum. Everytime a law is enacted or created, it has been vetted and challenged and gone through a series of procedures and several different courtrooms. Also with punishment, the system is not perfect, but at the end of the day, the people have the right to have their trial by a pool of jury of their peers, and there is also a process when that is determined. Also, the justice system, at least, leaves room for methods and ways to improve upon it. Honestly, this is also what keeps AI from replacing the criminal system. AI can only capture the word of the law, but will never understand the essence of the law. AI cannot distinguish facts, it only understands keywords, and due to that its limited by what it's given or inputted, whereas the human mind does not. Human mind can learn when a law is no longer effective, they can challenge it, question it, and change it. AI will continue using whatever parameters that was set in its conception, unless someone does an update. I guess ultimately, every year we have new people learning and entering the legal field who are keeping things moving and changing things. It makes law and the concept of justice a breathing entity, which is kind of beautiful humane process.
