MONDAY NUGGET: PEOPLE & PETS: TIME CHANGE IN THE U.S.
Daylight Saving Time: Your Dog Didn't Get the Memo, and Your Cat Wants to Speak to Management! And you have no clue what time it is. 😂 Well, folks, we turned our clocks back an hour yesterday. Apparently, nobody consulted our brains, our hormones, our dogs, or the cats who believe they own the household! - The dog: "Excuse me! It's breakfast time. I don't care what the microwave says!" - The cat: "I demand to speak to management. This disruption is unacceptable!" - The human: "Why am I wide awake at 3 a.m., and why do I want dinner at 4?" Sound familiar? 😂 But here's something fascinating. YOUR BODY DOESN'T OPERATE ON WALL CLOCKS! Humans and animals have internal biological clocks that regulate much more than sleep. These clocks are part of our circadian rhythm, a roughly 24-hour biological system influenced by light, darkness, feeding schedules, and daily routines. And when we suddenly change the time? Our bodies don't automatically follow! WHAT HAPPENS TO HUMANS? Even though we supposedly gained an hour of sleep, the transition can temporarily disrupt our internal timing. Here's what may happen: - Melatonin disruption: Melatonin helps regulate sleep and wake cycles. Changes in light exposure and bedtime routines can temporarily affect its timing. - Cortisol changes: Cortisol normally follows a daily rhythm, rising around waking and declining toward bedtime. Changes in sleep timing can temporarily influence that pattern. - Cardiovascular effects: Sleep disruption can influence blood pressure, heart rate, and autonomic nervous system activity. Research suggests the spring transition is generally more disruptive than the fall transition. - Metabolic changes: Circadian rhythms help regulate insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, appetite, and digestion. - Your gut has a clock, too! The gastrointestinal system and gut microbiome exhibit daily rhythms influenced by sleep, food timing, and light exposure. - Sleep disturbances: Some people experience early waking, daytime fatigue, irritability, or difficulty adjusting to the new schedule.

FRIDAY NUGGET: HALLOWEEN SAFETY FOR PEOPLE & PETS!
BOO! DON'T LET HALLOWEEN TURN INTO A MEDICAL NIGHTMARE! Halloween is tomorrow, and Skulliver has a bone to pick with anyone who forgets about safety! 💀😂 Between the candy, costumes, creepy decorations, and things that go bump in the night, Halloween can be a real fright fest for people AND their four-legged family members. Let's keep the scares pretend and the emergencies nonexistent! 🎃 FOR THE HUMANS: BEWARE OF THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT! - Candy Overload: A little Halloween candy is one thing. Eating half the neighborhood's candy supply is another! Excessive sugar can cause blood glucose spikes, digestive upset, and a miserable morning after. Individuals with diabetes should be especially mindful. - Candles and Decorations: Open flames, dangling decorations, and extension cords can turn a haunted house into a genuine hazard. Battery-operated candles are a safer alternative. - Costume Catastrophes: Avoid costumes that obstruct vision, restrict breathing, or create tripping hazards. Those fabulous Halloween shoes aren't worth a fractured ankle! - Watch for Little Goblins: Children are excited, distracted, and sometimes difficult for drivers to see. Use reflective materials, flashlights, and extra caution at intersections. - Witches' Brew: If your Halloween celebration includes alcohol, remember that alcohol can impair judgment, affect blood glucose, and interact with medications. Arrange a sober ride. - Sensory Overload: Flashing lights, loud noises, and frightening surprises can be overwhelming for individuals with sensory sensitivities, anxiety, migraines, or certain neurological conditions. 😻 FOR OUR FURRY GHOULS: THE REAL HALLOWEEN HORRORS! - Chocolate Is NOT a Treat! Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which can be toxic to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous. - Beware of Xylitol! This sugar substitute, also called birch sugar, can cause life-threatening hypoglycemia and liver injury in dogs. It may be found in sugar-free candy, gum, and other products.

FRIDAY NUGGET: HALLOWEEN SAFETY FOR PEOPLE & PETS!
WEDNESDAY HEALTH NUGGET: MICROPLASTICS IN YOUR FOOD
SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT! TODAY, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, AT 5:00 PM EASTERN! Hosted by @Andrew Brooks I'll be speaking in his community SPIRITED FOOD about: MICROPLASTICS. YOUR BRAIN DIDN'T ORDER PLASTIC FOR DINNER! But researchers are discovering that microscopic plastic particles are finding their way into our bodies, including our brains! I LITERALLY WROTE AN E-BOOK ON THIS SUBJECT! FOUND ON AMAZON! BITES OF BETRAYAL: THE HIDDEN PLASTICS IN OUR FOOD Uncovering Plastic in Food By Dr. Peninah Wood, Ph.D. Microplastics are no longer just an environmental conversation. They're a human health conversation and concern. I wrote this book to explore the hidden plastics entering our food supply, where they come from, where they end up, and why understanding our everyday exposure matters. Microplastics and nanoplastics have been detected in human brain tissue, blood vessels, lungs, liver, kidneys, testicles, and even the placenta. And where are some of these particles coming from? - Plastic water bottles - Plastic food containers - Food packaging - Contaminated seafood - Salt and other foods - Drinking water Scientists are investigating their connections to inflammation, oxidative stress, cellular damage, hormonal disruption, and neurological health. We'll explore how plastics enter our food supply, what researchers are discovering inside the human body, and practical ways to reduce exposure. This isn't about creating fear. It's about creating awareness through science! And Skulliver has a question: "I ordered dinner, not a recycling bin! Is it too late to change my order?" 😂 Join me this evening in SPIRITED FOOD for a fascinating conversation about something that may already be on your dinner plate! SUNDAY HEALTH NUGGET: HEAVY METALS
Heavy Metals: The Great Masqueraders of Chronic Disease! What if your symptoms are real, your diagnosis is real, but nobody has investigated what might be contributing to them? Heavy metals can be some of the most overlooked contributors to chronic illness. From a Functional Medicine perspective, we ask an important question: Could toxic metal exposure be contributing to the symptoms you've been experiencing for years? YOU ARE EXPOSED TO HEAVY METALS DAILY! In Your House In Your Kitchen At Your Job In Your Hobbies In Your Beauty Routine In Your Food In Your Environment In Your Mouth THE GREAT IMPOSTERS THAT MIMIC DISEASES. Certain heavy metals can affect multiple organs and biological systems, producing symptoms that mimic many common diagnoses. Here are just a few: - Mercury: Can affect the nervous system, contributing to tremors, memory problems, sensory disturbances, and difficulty concentrating. - Lead: Can affect the brain, kidneys, cardiovascular system, and nerves. Exposure may contribute to fatigue, cognitive difficulties, high blood pressure, and neuropathy. - Cadmium: Can accumulate in the kidneys and is associated with kidney damage and bone disease after significant long term exposure. - Arsenic: Chronic exposure can cause numbness, tingling, gastrointestinal problems, skin changes, and peripheral neuropathy. WHAT CAN HEAVY METAL TOXICITY LOOK LIKE? Symptoms can be: - Chronic fatigue conditions - Peripheral neuropathy - Cognitive impairment and brain fog - Certain gastrointestinal disorders - Kidney disease - Some cardiovascular conditions - Mood and concentration difficulties DID YOU KNOW? I can order appropriate laboratory testing throughout the United States, including testing for heavy metals when clinically indicated. My goal is not to chase every possible toxin. My goal is to help identify what is actually contributing to your health problems. Because treating symptoms matters, but understanding WHY those symptoms are occurring should be your first step.
SUNDAY HEALTH NUGGET: HEAVY METALS
@Lisa Vanderveen I'm working hard to change that!
@Lisa Vanderveen yes it is!
SATURDAY HEALTH NUGGET: LONG COVID & THE BRAIN
MARK YOUR CALENDAR! TUESDAY NOVEMBER 3, 2026. TIME TO BE DETERMINED. SPECIAL SIMCHA HEALTHCARE CLASS: LONG COVID AND THE BRAIN LONG COVID: THE VIRUS MAY BE GONE, BUT THE SYMPTOMS AREN'T! COVID may have left the building, but for millions of people, it left behind some very unwelcome guests! Brain fog. Crushing fatigue. Muscle pain. Memory problems. Dizziness. Heart palpitations. Sleep disturbances. Difficulty concentrating. And symptoms that seem to come and go without explanation. Sound familiar? For some people, COVID was more than a temporary respiratory infection. It became a condition that affects multiple systems throughout the body, sometimes for months or even years. Welcome to the complicated world of Long COVID. WHAT IS HAPPENING INSIDE THE BODY? Researchers are investigating several possible contributors to Long COVID, including: - Neuroinflammation and nervous system dysfunction - Immune system dysregulation - Persistent inflammatory responses - Changes in blood vessel function and circulation - Mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired energy production - Autoimmune responses - Possible viral persistence or reactivation of other viruses, including Epstein Barr virus Not everyone with Long COVID has the same underlying biological changes. That is one reason this condition can be so difficult to understand and manage. I recently attended an conference exploring new research involving Long COVID and brain health. Now I want to share what I learned with YOU! AND EXCITING NEWS FROM SIMCHA HEALTHCARE! I now have access to order the brand new Long COVID and Brain Health Lab Panel in the U.S. This advanced specialized lab panel examines a variety of immune markers, antibodies, and other biological signals being investigated in connection with Long COVID and neurological symptoms. Some of the markers involve Epstein Barr virus, autoimmune activity, and immune system responses. Research is moving forward, and I believe patients deserve to understand what scientists are discovering.
