The mind doesn't usually stop you all at once...
It usually starts with one small decision. "I won't go this time." Then... "I'll stay home instead." Before long, one avoided situation quietly becomes ten. Many people think anxiety suddenly takes over their lives. It rarely does. It happens gradually. Not because you're weak. Because your mind is trying to protect you. The problem is... An overprotective mind can end up protecting you from the very life you're trying to live. The encouraging news? I've seen people take holidays again. Drive again. Sleep again. Say yes again. Sometimes all it takes is understanding why your mind started protecting you in the first place.

I used to think I had a sleep problem.
Looking back... I don't think I did. I had a stress problem. An exam problem. An on-call NHS problem. A newborn baby problem. A redundancy problem. Sleep was simply where all those things showed up. For years I tried the obvious solutions. More tea. More coffee. Energy drinks. Caffeine tablets. Melatonin. Staying up later. Trying harder to sleep. Eventually I realised something. The harder I tried to sleep... The more awake I became. Today my sleep isn't perfect. Nobody's is. Sometimes I wake earlier than I'd like. Sometimes I take a little longer to drift off. The difference is... It no longer bothers me. Because I'm no longer fighting sleep. I'm working with my mind instead of against it. Sometimes changing the relationship with the problem changes the problem itself.
I used to think I had a sleep problem.

@Ina Tenniswood Thanks. Our mind is always looking for happiness and solving the things in the way of getting to that happiness.

๐Ÿ‘ Pat Yourself On The Back
Most people are very good at noticing what they haven't done. The unfinished jobs. The mistakes. The things they could have done better. But when was the last time you stopped and acknowledged what you have done? Finished the school run? Pat yourself on the back. Had a difficult conversation? Pat yourself on the back. Went for the walk even though you didn't feel like it? Pat yourself on the back. Your mind responds surprisingly well to encouragement. A bit like a child proudly showing you a drawing. You don't point out what's wrong. You smile. You encourage, You celebrate the effort. Then they want to do more. Perhaps it's time we treated ourselves with the same kindness.

Doors of Choice
One thing I've noticed over the years is that fear has a habit of disguising itself as a lack of choice. "I can't do that." "I have no option." "That's not for me.โ€ If we are fearful of Door B, and we only choose A because it feels safe, is it really a choice? Confidence isn't about forcing yourself through every door. It's about having the freedom to choose. Often the door isn't locked. We're just convinced it is. The goal isn't to push yourself into things you don't want. The goal is to regain the freedom to choose between the doors in front of you. What door have you convinced yourself is locked?

@Ina Tenniswood Thanks Ina. Exactly...how will we know it's unlocked, until we try the handle?
