I have been exploring opportunities to apply knowledge and skills to The heavily funded Ionospheric/Tomography research that has been underway for some time now. Perfect fit for experienced Amateur Radio operators who pursue Long range HF communications, with DX. Been doing that for 60 years or so. Even though being a late arrival to this DARPA funding offer, on this Tomography stuff, I discovered there are vast levels and layers [call them F1, F2, and D and E layers] :-) of R and D research on going to model he ionosphere which is dynamic, and complex. So far I have found pretty much ALL the commercial HF broadcasting sites around the world... [where HF RHOMBICS 1000 feet or more long are found or may be constructed.] Finding opportunities, is like finding and using a paper road map to Paris-- from Berlin. I discovered this NTA site that can offer some navigation assistance, "to Paris". Look up NTA.ORG and if you learn anything, a hot lead, that you can share, please do. -- PJB

Next weekend is the annual Ham Radio Field day operating event. One of the most fun and popular national events practicing preparedness.
A group I have been with since 1967, nearly every year, meets this time as usual, at Chews Ridge, about 5000 MSL overlooking the Salinas Valley Silicon Valley and Big Sur, a heavenly place. Almost routine... but NEVER routine. Here, a Santa Cruz news magazine and Radio Club did a story on us...from some years ago. https://www.slvarc.org/archives/164

I like your descriptor of "Organized Chaos": Most events of real, large magnitude disasters, are and remain for some time, "organized chaos". And Field days are fun, and very beneficial training sessions to the Radio Hams who are able to come to the disaster zones and as much as possible, become very humble, effective assistants to the Disaster handler professionals, when needed, and are self organized "tools" that quickly become useful to the Chaotic scenes. Look up "Hurricane KATRINA" disaster response, An extreme disaster, with well written accurate notes, analysis of the entire disaster response event. The US military, including the Naval Postgraduate School response teams mobilized, and later did a comprehensive after action report. Look also for a Satellite Photo of the Katrina hurricane in the GULF OF MEXICO as it approached New Orleans. It was definitely an O-M-G! pre disaster photo.

https://nta.org/membership/ free membership, perhaps a useful organization to add, for Fellowship of Mad Scientists to build innovation networks.
Non Newtonian Smart Material:
Turns from soft goo-y Putty.... If experiencing Impact, in milliseconds, turns to structural rigid 3 D "steel", and takes very heavy impacts, while, in this demo, protecting an egg inside it.... Probably a great thing to do testing on in a Formula 1 development lab. Perhaps a material to use in Custom molded driver's seats saving lives, in event of violent crashes. -PJB
