Paul Desmond’s solo on ‘Rising Sun’ - Brubeck Quartet
This solo is incredibly fun for violin. The heavy, almost glissando-like vibrato is super engaging and Desmond’s ability to just come up with these overarching melodies and lines is something you just don’t see in all musicians. Here’s my crack at it. I’m a new member, and happy to be in the community! If you all know of some other great ballad solos like this please suggest them to me! And overall, how should a jazz violinist best approach a ballad solo? I’d love to hear some tips on how you all improvise this kind of stuff.

@Skylar Perran skylar this is good. I can’t help but notice that we’re the only two really in it. Iron sharpens iron.

recorded this in the bathroom of a friends house much to their complaint. I realized i couldn’t miss the streak though. Jazz stops at nothing. Sorry i didn’t play the lick the second time through the chorus, i was recording this on my phone while also having the backing track come out of my phone. Pictured is the faucet used to prop it up. Thank you matt for the guidance as always, this one was rough.
Day 3 of the 5 Day Challenge-Chord Tone Motifs
Comment “day 3” on this post to keep up your streak! Use this thread to post your progress videos and ask any questions you have about the challenge. Well done for making it to day 3! Today is all about creating small two note motifs from the chord tones and using them to improvise with. It’s an exercise that I think anyone at any level can learn from. Forcing yourself to stay simple can help you find inspiration a lot easier than a blank canvas. Looking forward to your videos!

so tricky not to just start going at it and improvising! I think breaking it down is helping me realize when the changes happen though - then i can think of the piece with a greater lens.
