I noticed something. It was something I used to struggle with and it can undermine the perception people have about our competence and confidence. For sure the first 2 of our sisters in call 6 were using "Uuums" in almost every sentence. Ben noticed the same for the next soulful sales sister. This is NORMAL. I used to do it all the time, 20-30 % of my words were "fillers", empty vessels used to fill the silent space. I have quite some expertise in psychology, martial arts, intimacy, but I was undermining the effect my words had on my coachees or speaking audience. The most commonly used FILLER WORDS in English are: 1. Um: A hesitation sound, often used when pausing or searching for words. 2. Like: A phrase used to soften or qualify a statement, often indicating a lack of confidence. 3. So: A transitional word used to connect ideas, but can also indicate a lack of clarity. 4. Er: A hesitation sound, similar to “um”, often used when searching for words. 5. You know: A phrase used to seek agreement or confirmation, but can also indicate a lack of conviction. 6. Right: A phrase used to seek agreement or confirmation, but can also indicate a lack of confidence. 7. Ah: A hesitation sound, often used when pausing or searching for words. 8. Well: A phrase used to soften or qualify a statement, often indicating a lack of confidence. In public speaking training, I was able to remove 90% of the filler words (in Toastmasters they count them), by replacing it with SILENCE ( a Pause) and eye-contact. Both on the stage or in a one-to-one conversation, this makes a HUGE difference. Using silence packs your words with so much more power. Let's do a session this weekend, where we each give a 5 minute speech or introduction about who we are and what we want to dedicate our lives to. We all count the amount of filler words the speaker uses. Then, at the end, we give the same 5-minute speech and deliberately use pauses, and calm body language (shoulders pulled back, unclenched jaw, soft eyes, perhaps a slight smile, and take a deep breath).
