Welcome to The Excavation Academy. This community is about how the work actually gets done — pipe, prep, compaction, grades, safety, and the details that separate clean jobs from call-backs. No influencer crap. No textbook theory. Just real-world excavation and civil knowledge. 👇 Drop a comment and introduce yourself: Where are you working (city / region)? What do you do right now? (laborer, operator, foreman, owner, etc.) What do you want to get better at this year? This group will grow based on real questions and real problems from the field. Let’s build it properly.

Hello everyone my name is Nick, I’ve been working in west Florida for a little over 4 years now. I started off as a laborer knowing nothing about civil construction and now I’ve recently been promoted to Pipe Foreman. I went from being a laborer/hillman to a tailman to a pipe layer. Then a loader operator to a dozer operator. I’ve also gained experience on mini excavators like a CAT 305 and larger machines like a Komatsu 490 but not as much as the minis. Currently the company I work for is starting me off small with a 3 man crew including myself running our little 305 tying into existing storm runs for roof drains. We’re digging in tight spaces and most to this storm is about 6 foot deep. I’d like to learn some advanced practices for digging in areas where you don’t know what utilities are in the ground as well as digging in small deep holes while staying OSHA compliant with my slopes. I’d also like to learn more about shooting grade, best practices for keeping your notebook with all your elevations organized and clean and how to really work the numbers to my advantage.
