I just watched the video about overcoming this mistake, and I admit it - I'm confused. You keep repeating 'start shipping' but what exactly does that mean? In the example you gave, you said you started messaging schools even though you didn't have anything to sell them - so what exactly were you offering them in the email?

@Teresa Dossor I don't know what kind of slides they are, but you could try something like Fiverr (I don't recommend them in general, because they also have a habit of deleting your account without explanation, but that's a story for another day... but if it's just to test the waters with a product, it could be an option. )
Niche help
I liked the idea of creating your niche. I'm a bit hesitant with how to do that. I would love to help Music Therapists, but I'm not sure if many of them even need my help. I plan on working with them on enhancing their English communication and presentation skills. Too narrow? Thanks for any feedback.

@Anna Torr I would agre with that! Although I also worry that if the niche is too specific, it may be hard to find enough students who both fit within that niche and have the resources to afford the service...

@Anna Torr That's a great point! Quality (and higher price points!) over quantity!
Reflections - Problems & Ideal Self
My current problem is how to move forward in a different direction with my business. I have a full schedule of 1-2-1 online students, but I want to be able to grow my business without having to teach more hours. My issue is that I don't know what that new direction looks like. I focus on teaching adults, and I think I'm great at helping them improve both their English levels and their confidence through customised programs. Everyone has a slightly different class, depending on what they need. The issue with that is that it's hard to turn that into a product or general course. My ideal future self would have a lot more flexibility regarding work hours, and enough income to fund the tools and platforms needed to do so. I would also have more time to focus on working ON my business, rather than IN my business (i.e. focusing on development and creation, instead of just teaching classes). This week, I'm trying to spend some time each day on strategic thinking, instead of just classes and lesson planning.

@Andrew Woodbury Those are great questions - I'll think more about them this week. The first is pretty easy to answer, but the second is a little more complicated!
How do you find students online?

And if we're being honest, having this sorted out is the only way for a business to survive. So why don't we help each other out. Drop your tips and strategies below and let's learn together. For many years, I used Fiverr - it's a little crowded there now, but when I first signed up there was much less competition, so I was able to have high ratings which helped attract new students. I used to provide both English classes and IELTS writing feedback there. Unfortunately, someone who doesn't really understand how IELTS works decided that instead of teaching students with the feedback I was giving them on their writing, I was completing academic work for them (something I am vehemently against) and I lost my account. My recommendation would be that whatever site you are using to find students, that you don't rely on only one, and that you have your own space to direct your students to after they start classes with you.

@Andrew Woodbury It was permanently deleted with no explanation and no conversation - I wasn't given a chance to even defend myself or explain how I was following their academic work policy. I could always sign up again, but of course it wouldn't have any of the hundreds of positive reviews that my first account had, and frankly I don't want to give any more money to a company who treats their contributors like that.

Hi everyone! My name's Natasha, and I've been teaching English now for over 12 years, the last 8 of those being an independent teacher. While I feel like I have a successful business, I'm tired of being tied down to one on one classes and want to create another option that doesn't rely on directly swapping my time for money. I've focused a lot on IELTS preparation, however this slowed down considerably during the pandemic, and I'm not sure if I want to continue along this path. I joined this community to receive some inspiration and a push to other paths I could take, to develop a product/course/community that allows me to grow my business while not taking up all of my time. My goal I guess is to decide on an area of focus and start creating whatever it is. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

@Andrew Woodbury Unfortunately I don't have a product/course/community right now. I have a Facebook page, however I don't think they are really my ideal students (interested in free tips, not in paid services). I'm still deciding what kind of product/course/community I want to develop.
