Mistake #1: Overthinking Your Idea
Let’s jump into the first (and most common) mistake new children’s book authors make: 1️⃣ Overthinking the Idea Most people believe they need a perfect idea before they can start. But the truth is: 👉 Simple ideas make the BEST children’s books. 👉 You don’t need a “big” idea — you just need a clear one. 👉 Execution beats perfection every time. Think about it: - A llama won’t go to bed. - A pigeon wants to drive a bus. - A caterpillar eats a ton. - A dad tells his baby “You were made for me.” None of these are complicated. They’re simple ideas told with heart, rhythm, and emotion. Here’s how to stop overthinking: ✔️ Start with ONE feeling you want kids to experience. Is it joy? silliness? comfort? courage? ✔️ Start with ONE problem your character faces. Won’t share? Won’t sleep? Won’t listen? Wants something silly? ✔️ Start with ONE moment from your life. Kids connect with truth — even tiny moments. Your Turn: Drop ONE simple idea you’ve had below — even if it feels “too small” or “not perfect.” I’ll give feedback to everyone who comments. Let’s get your story out of your head and onto the page. 🚀✏️

I would like children to learn about nature in their community. My story is about 2 tuxedo cats who sit in their cat trees with a view of a big tree full of life:squirrels, bugs, birds, lizards. I would like to create a story that shows how they all benefit from the tree and how they are part of a community.
