🐘💦 The Day an Elephant Taught Me the True Meaning of “Self‑Care”
Hey everyone — Gareth here. Thought I’d share a quick wildlife travel moment that still makes me laugh. A while back in South Africa, we came across a young elephant who had clearly decided it was Spa Day. No booking. No robe. No shame. He walked straight into a mud wallow, scooped up a trunkful of sludge, and launched it over himself like he was auditioning for a L’Oréal commercial called “Because I’m Worth It… and Also It’s 42°C.” At one point he looked at us — absolutely plastered in mud — with the same expression you give someone who catches you eating peanut butter straight from the jar.A sort of: “Yes, I’m doing this. No, I will not be taking questions.” 🧭 Beginner wildlife travel tip of the day: If you ever feel awkward on a trip, just remember: Somewhere out there, an elephant is confidently wearing a full-body mud mask in public. You’ll be fine. If you want more funny stories, beginner tips, or ideas for wildlife‑friendly destinations, I’m happy to share them. Nature has a great sense of humour if you give it a moment. What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen while travelling?

Good job he didn't spray you lot with the spa treatment.
🔒 PINNED POST — TRAVELERS
You’re Not Behind. How This Group Helps (Without Pressure) Most people join travel groups feeling like they’re already late. Late to planning. Late to saving. Late compared to everyone else who seems to “travel all the time.” This group is intentionally built to remove that feeling. Here’s how to use this space without pressure: 1. There is no timeline here. Some members are actively booking. Some are just starting to think about travel again. Some are rebuilding confidence after years of not traveling. All of that belongs here. 2. Lurking is allowed. Reading quietly is not “falling behind.” It’s often how clarity rebuilds itself. 3. You don’t need a destination to participate. This group isn’t about pushing trips. It’s about reducing uncertainty so decisions feel easier when you’re ready. 4. Questions are welcome — readiness is optional. You don’t need to “know enough” before asking. Confusion is a normal starting point, not a problem to fix. 5. Nothing here expires. You won’t miss out by moving at your own pace. This group is designed to meet you where you actually are. Over time, many people find that simply being here makes it easier to recognize when something does feel like a good fit. Take what helps. Ignore what doesn’t. Move when it feels right. That’s how this space works.

🌎 During 40 years of travel and living abroad I have been lucky enough to visit over 120 countries, some 220 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and more than 100 of the World Heritage Cities. 📷 My pictures have been published in travel magazines, guide books and syndicated around the world through established picture agencies. After starting out as a freelance photo journalist, I founded TravelNotes.org in 1997, to help other travellers and virtual tourists discover more about the world we live in. 🌴 Always planning the next adventure. Switzerland at the moment, France last week.

@Michael Johnson New destinations is always top of my list.
Why There Are Two Spaces
Most people don’t need more travel information. They need a place to get oriented first, and later, a place to decide. That’s why there are two spaces. Travelers exists to help you slow down, look around, and get your bearings. It’s where questions are normal, uncertainty is expected, and nothing is assumed. Think of it as orientation and calm. A place to feel grounded before doing anything else. The Collective exists for a different moment. Not when you’re curious ... but when you’re closer to choosing. It’s where context matters, tradeoffs are clarified, and decisions become lighter instead of heavier. Most people stay in Travelers. Some move between both. There is no required path. If you ever find yourself thinking, “I mostly know what I want. I just want to be confident I’m choosing well,” that’s usually when the difference becomes obvious. Nothing to do here. Just wanted you to understand how the spaces work. Most people realize this gradually, not all at once.

I'm always visiting somewhere and mostly always know where and when to go next. Hopefully, if I stick in 'Travellers' I can help others decide. For me, it's mostly 'feeling' and a love of maps.
How to Use This Community
Most people arrive here at different points in their travel journey. Some already know where they want to go. Some are still figuring that out. Some simply want to understand what’s possible again. This space is organized so you can explore naturally — without needing to figure everything out all at once. Here’s how most people use the community: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Start with the First Step Lounge → [Go to First Step Lounge] This is where everything begins. It helps you get oriented and understand how the community works. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Explore the Trip Preview Hub →[Go to The Trip Preview Hub] This is where upcoming trips and destinations are organized clearly. You can browse at your own pace and see what feels right. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Use the Roommate Match area if helpful →[Link to Be Added Soon] Many travelers prefer sharing rooms. This makes trips more affordable and often leads to lasting travel friendships. This is always optional. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join conversations when it feels natural You’re welcome to participate — or simply observe. Many people start quietly and engage more over time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You don’t need to do everything. Most people simply explore what feels relevant, when they’re ready.

I need to slow down, there appears to be nothing in the Preview Hub.

@Dawn Higgins - How come Hungary is mentioned and nowhere else in Europe. You couldn't have been there in the navy, as they only have a couple of lakes.
⭐What This Space Is (And Isn’t)
Most people arrive here somewhere in the middle. Some are ready to travel soon. Some are still figuring out what makes sense. Some just want to understand what’s possible again. All of that is normal. This community exists to make travel feel clearer, calmer, and easier to approach — without pressure. You don’t need to introduce yourself. You don’t need to commit to anything. You don’t need to decide anything right now. You can simply explore.
