Building a Flight Instructor's Library
As a fresh Class 4 flight instructor, I may a little ways away from becoming a CAM. But one thing that stood out to me when looking through the CAM masterclass material was how one of the first steps is building your library. So that got me thinking "what would be in a flight instructor's library?". So far I have the following as pdfs in NotebookLM: - Transport Canada Flight Instructor Guide - FAA Airplane Flying Handbook - FAA Aviation Instructor's Handbook - Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators I plan to add Learning How to Learn by Barbara Oakley. But I'd be curious to hear from the group for other material that you'd recommend or have found helpful in your own instructing/learning!

Those are some good recommendations! I’ll have to check out Performance Pilot. Pilot Factor and Factored will definitely be put on the list as I can already confirm they’re quite good reads 🫡
Finding your Why
Why I'm Here (Read and Post This Before You Start the NBAA CAM course 🚧STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS!🚧 ) Before you open a single module, this is the first thing you do here. The CAM is about six months of real work, roughly two hours a day, six days a week. Nobody crosses that finish line on motivation alone. The candidates who go the distance are the ones who got clear, on day one, about why they were doing it. So tell us. In a few sentences: when this gets hard, what is the reason you will keep going? Name the people who depend on your judgment, the standard you want to hold, or the version of yourself on the other side of this exam. Skip the resume answer ("it is good for my career") and go a layer or two deeper. The honest reason is the one that will still be standing in month four. Post your why below. 👇Then read a few others and welcome someone in. You are about to spend six months in the same arena as these people, and it helps to know what everyone is fighting for. Date your post. Six months from now, come back and read it. I will go first.

I am here as while I may be quite a few years away from actually being eligible to apply (transitioning now to my first flying job), I've realized that flight training is just the starting point and that there is so much out there to learn. And having the overall goal of becoming a CAM I hope will guide me along in that learning process to becoming not just a better pilot, but aviation professional and person overall. Especially as I'm about to start flight instructing. I'm incredibly grateful for this group so far and I hope to keep the growth going.

Learning how to learn🤓
I recently picked up the book "Learning How to Learn" to help my daughter tackle her math homework, and it provides an incredibly comprehensive framework for mastering complex subjects. The book breaks down the biological mechanics of how the brain absorbs information, introducing a dual-mode thinking model that alternates between intense, concentrated focus and a relaxed, creative "diffuse" state. We've started applying practical, evidence-based strategies like the Pomodoro Technique and active recall to build lasting neural connections, alongside spaced repetition and interleaving to ensure long-term retention. These methods actively prevent the "illusion of competence" that comes from passive reading. The material also highlights how fundamental physical lifestyle factors, including quality sleep, regular exercise, and a healthy diet, are to overall cognitive performance. It essentially empowers you to become a "learning scientist," systematically applying tools that are just as effective for professional development and instructional design as they are for middle-school math.

Thank you for sharing this! Learning how to learn a variety of subjects was the challenge throughout my university studies. Even now I’ve still caught myself out on passively reading and consuming content (videos, podcasts, etc), so this a good reminder to employ active learning. Do you @Jean Denis Marcellin find that creating and sharing content helps you work towards mastery of a subject?
Marketing advice!?
Hey everyone! I need some help for picking the right content on my Amazon listing for The Pilot Factor. I've attached a few ideas that outline the book in a fun way - which one is more appealing to you?

I agree with Shane, the graphic style on the first is a little easier to follow along with, but the second slide of the second one is a good way to frame what the book is about
