Learning how to learn🤓
I recently picked up the book "Learning How to Learn" to help my daughter tackle her math homework, and it provides an incredibly comprehensive framework for mastering complex subjects. The book breaks down the biological mechanics of how the brain absorbs information, introducing a dual-mode thinking model that alternates between intense, concentrated focus and a relaxed, creative "diffuse" state. We've started applying practical, evidence-based strategies like the Pomodoro Technique and active recall to build lasting neural connections, alongside spaced repetition and interleaving to ensure long-term retention. These methods actively prevent the "illusion of competence" that comes from passive reading. The material also highlights how fundamental physical lifestyle factors, including quality sleep, regular exercise, and a healthy diet, are to overall cognitive performance. It essentially empowers you to become a "learning scientist," systematically applying tools that are just as effective for professional development and instructional design as they are for middle-school math.

Thank you for sharing this! Learning how to learn a variety of subjects was the challenge throughout my university studies. Even now I’ve still caught myself out on passively reading and consuming content (videos, podcasts, etc), so this a good reminder to employ active learning. Do you @Jean Denis Marcellin find that creating and sharing content helps you work towards mastery of a subject?

Hey everyone! I need some help for picking the right content on my Amazon listing for The Pilot Factor. I've attached a few ideas that outline the book in a fun way - which one is more appealing to you?

I agree with Shane, the graphic style on the first is a little easier to follow along with, but the second slide of the second one is a good way to frame what the book is about

March for me will be working towards my flight instructor rating and revisiting all of the basics!

@Jean Denis Marcellin That's a great question! It's been in the back of my mind the past week and I'd say learning how to directly and quickly implement new pieces of information learned. Often, I find myself being able to uncover why a mistake was made or the root cause behind a sequence of events, but then fall short with implementing a small change based on what was learned.
Self-Assessment: Your Leadership Starting Point
Take a moment to reflect on one (or more) of these questions: a) When you think of "leaders" in aviation, who comes to mind and why? What specific behaviors make them effective? b) Recall a flight or operational situation where leadership made the difference between a good outcome and a poor one. What did the leader do specifically? c) On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current leadership abilities in - Building trust quickly with new crew members - Speaking up when you see safety concerns - Encouraging others to voice concerns - Managing conflicts constructively - Making decisions under pressure with team input d) What's one leadership behavior you want to develop through this series? Make sure to engage with at least one other member’s post — leadership grows in community! (This is self-reflection module #1 of the Essential Leadership mini-course)

When I think of leaders in aviation a few come to mind, all with the same undertone of the pursuit of excellence, humbleness, and desire to share aviation wisdom with others: @Jean Denis Marcellin , Kolin Jones (Amalfi Jets), Steve Varsano (The Jet Business), Kenn Ricci (Flexjet), and Capt. Warren Vanderburgh. All of these leaders in their respective way/niche in aviation, embody attributes which I aspire to ascertain. I hope that through this series, I can begin to analyze the finer details of what exactly these leaders embody, and learn how to take action on growing as a leader and aviation professional.

@Jean Denis Marcellin I'd say what drives me most is my current pursuit of a flight instructor rating, and striving to answer the question of "what principles do/did they leaders embody that I can apply into my life and profession to be successful?". And what triggered this desire was when I was unsuccessful in a leadership role on a student engineering team, and wanting to understand why and where I fell short. I'm incredibly grateful for your efforts and this online community where we all have the opportunity to learn and grow one another!
Leading through the storm ⚓
This isn't strictly aviation related, but more a life skill I continue to pursue. Leadership is, at the core, the ability to relate to those around you in a way through which you can help them see the brighter hope ahead. It's about being a lighthouse in the often chaotic world. Here are some of my notes, compiled in a PDF format which I hope will resonate with you. If you like this, give me your thoughts on if you'd like to see a micro course on it!

Being from the East Coast I appreciate the nautical theme! It would be interesting to see a micro course or maybe a work book on it.
