Rope Recommendations
Hey everyone! I want to get my knots down before my potential start of an October Academy (hopefully) so I'm not fumbling around when the pressure's on. I'm looking to buy a practice rope, but I'd love to hear from people who've actually been through it what rope did you use to practice, where did you buy it, and any tips on what to avoid? I know the group has rope & knot video tutorials too, definitely planning to use those. Just want to make sure I'm practicing with the right gear from the start. Thanks in advance! 🔥🪢

I’d grab a 1/2 inch static utility rope, around 10 to 15 feet. That’s pretty close to what you’ll see in a lot of academies and it’s perfect for practicing knots. You can find it at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Amazon, or any climbing/outdoor store. The biggest thing is just getting reps in. Tie them over and over until you can do them without thinking. The videos in the group are a great place to start too. Good luck, hope you get that October academy spot! 🔥

@Ryan Bendixen Either one works for practicing knots, so I wouldn’t overthink it. I personally lean toward nylon because it feels a little closer to the rope you’ll come across in the fire service and it’s generally more durable. The biggest thing is just getting a rope that’s around 3/8” to 1/2” thick so it’s comfortable to practice with consistently.

New Here
Hey everyone! I'm new here and am excited to be part of a community that's all about helping future first responders succeed. I'm currently in the hiring process with Norfolk Fire-Rescue in VA. I passed the written exam with a 95% and the physical test on my first try (thankfully). Made it through the background investigation and polygraph as well. Next up is my METs test Friday the 7th. I had my wisdom teeth pulled last week but got cleared by my dentist this morning, so I'm ready to start grinding again. I'm considering the premium membership to get physically ready for the potential of being hired and selected for the October academy. What exactly is in the 30- or 60-day prep programs? I'm hoping some of you can point me in the right direction or share what worked for you. Any advice, tips, or tricks are hugely appreciated. And happy to share what I've learned so far and offer encouragement along the way!

Hey! First off, congrats on making it this far. Sounds like you’ve been crushing every step of the process so far. Best of luck on your METs test too. The 30 and 60 day programs are built to prepare you for the fire academy. They include structured workouts focused on endurance, strength, stair climbing, running, functional movements, and job specific conditioning. There are options for no gear, gear only, and gym based training, so you can use whatever equipment you have access to. Everything is laid out day by day, so you just open it up and follow along. No pressure at all, but if you have any questions about the programs or your academy prep, just shoot me a message. I’d be happy to help. Looking forward to hopefully seeing you in the community!
Day 10
10th day into academy. Humbled by ladders today. On-air SCBA as a class for the first time. Interesting experience. Glad I was able to overcome that new feeling.

Love to hear it. Every class has that one skill that humbles you, and ladders are definitely one of them. The fact that you pushed through your first time on air is a big win. Keep stacking those small victories every day and you’ll be surprised how comfortable it all feels in a few weeks. Keep it up! 🫡
Fire academy PAT
Hey what’s going on everyone just wanna introduce my self I’m Anderson just completed EMT at BC and I plan on going to BFA in the spring I’m currently training for the PAT which is the 12th of September so if anyone’s has any tips or a general idea how it’s built I would very much appreciate it bless you all

Welcome to the group, Anderson! Congrats on finishing EMT. 💪 For the PAT, I would focus on building your cardio, leg endurance, and getting comfortable moving with weight. Lots of stairs, hill sprints, weighted carries, and functional workouts will go a long way. Since you’re planning on BFA in the spring, you have plenty of time to build a strong foundation. If you’re local, come out to one of our free group workouts sometime. We do a lot of academy style training and it will give you a good idea of what to expect. Looking forward to seeing you out there!
