Networking - Events and Resources
Hi everyone, I want to give everyone a space to share resources they know of or events they are doing. Please do not be salesy. This is not a sales page. But please let us know if you have any great webinars or other events that you are hosting or that you're excited to attend. I'll post a few in the comments below. It'd be great to learn from each other and expand our circles. Thanks!
@Kari Matthews - very gracious of you! If you can't make it, go ahead and register and you'll receive a recording of the call. Thanks all!
Looking for guidance in learning
Hello, I want to start learning accounting and bookkeeping to be able to run the finances of my own future-business. I am quite lost on how I can learn and where I can learn from. Could I ask for guidance on how I should start my journey of learning? (I am also quite short on time)

Niche?
Hi, if anyone would like to share, I’m interested in knowing whether you specialize in a a particular niche (i.e. doing bookkeeping for businesses in a certain industry), what it is and why you chose it. Or do you think it is better to be a generalist and why?

There are a lot of opinions on niches. I think a lot of this comes down to personal experience and preference. Personally when I started, I did not have relevant industry experience so I was a "generalist" which meant my messaging was vanilla ("I help small businesses") and I said yes to everything. In retrospect, I took on ill-fitting clients and spent untold hours learning industry specific software (that used car dealership POS software maaaaaay come in handy again, but probably not). So if you have domain expertise in a specific industry and you like it, I think it's a great place to start. You'll be seen as knowledgeable and immediate signal value. But test it out! One of my favorite expressions is to marry to work, date the niche. So if you're wedded to bookkeeping because that's your background/experience - perfect. Now try targeting a specific industry or sector with it. I eventually landed on service-based businesses under $3M after years of trial and error.

Hello! I'm Meredith Arlinghaus and I'm a recovering corporate professional. I spent 15+ years in corporate America (Deloitte and Lexis Nexis) and walked away due to extreme burn out. I fell into fractional accounting about 8 years ago and build a thriving solo practice while learning a ton along the way. I loved the freedom and flexibility it provided to so started a business helping others step out and do the same! Under my roof: Husband of 23 yrs; two daughters 19 and 17; son 14 ... + 1 black lab + 3 cats. Hobbies: working on our 150 yr old farmhouse; running; being outdoors; avid listener of podcasts and audiobooks What in my hands when not at my computer: IPAs and tacos
