Hey! I am Melanie Schenck. I grew up in Indiana but landed in Florida after my husband's Air Force career brought us to Eglin! I am currently Director of Human Resources for a local company and have been developing/implementing a safety program for our company. I am currently working on OSHA certification and am trying to develop a training/leadership program for our field supervisors. I need to learn how to set worthwhile goals (personal & professional) and prioritize all of my responsibilities/interests to best enhance my development and that of my team. I struggle with over-analyzing a situation and need to learn how to just take that first step!
A Listening Leader...
From what I’ve seen over the years, a listening leader attracts the best followers. These leaders were the type of people who didn’t cut their team members off while in the middle of explaining something. They would listen even when they didn’t agree and patiently wait for their turn to speak. If the followers ever made a mistake, their leader would hear them out before attempting to correct them. This is a huge differentiator between the good and bad leaders: Bad leaders often begin correcting and lecturing others based on their assumptions of a situation without having all the information. Good leaders gather all the data, remove assumptions, and wait until they can see the full picture before ever opening their mouth to correct others. I often tell managers that just because you hear your people out does not mean you have to subscribe to whatever they’re telling you. However, it will give you a much better understanding of how they see things and equip you to more effectively lead them.

Thanks, Cole! Great information! I think the post would be a great idea! I am pretty certain we're not the only ones who struggle with communication from time to time! I will definitely be working through that course!

I would totally agree with that. It's an ongoing issue that takes a constant conscious effort to maintain.
