Question from Hit Makers for Discussion...
So, I'm LOVING Derek Thompson's Hit Makers! I'm partial to Derek Thompson but that's besides the point. Such great stuff in the book, and another big thanks to @Kerry Morrison for making all this happen for us and being so generous. One question I'd love to hear from all of you on is related to something he writes in the book "To sell something familiar, make it surprising. To sell something surprising, make it familiar." Can we have some actual examples from YOUR work and just discuss/brainstorm ideas on how to do this. I absolutely love it and my brain will be happily marinating on this concept for awhile I think.

Love this idea of familiar/surprising! You've asked for examples from our own work and I think I have one - but it's not so much with words as it is the art I'm making (that is my 'work'). I take familiar scenes - often landscapes/cityscapes and blur them as though they're an out of focus photograph = the element of surprise. Though from the customer's perspective, it usually works the other way: they see a surprising image and as 'the penny drops' it becomes familiar. Here are some examples in case my explanation isn't clear πŸ˜‹ Thanks for bringing this up - I've never thought about it this way, but love the twist for explaining why what I do resonates with people!

Hiya - I'm not a copywriter (is that ok to admit here??) but I'm an artist with an online presence so I write copy... I do love words - as much as pictures, and learning new stuff is cool too. Excited to see what becomes of this space. Congrats @Kerry Morrison

I'm an artist who paints bokeh - like the blurry, out-of-focus pics your mum takes πŸ˜‰, but instead I'm doing it on purpose: elevating softness & light
