Today, give yourself ONE song. Sing it without stopping every time something comes out differently than you wanted. Let yourself finish before you start grading the performance. You can work on a tricky spot afterward. You do NOT have to be the best singer in this community to belong here. You don’t have to hit every note. You don’t have to already understand your voice. While I wait on the video from the Camel and Ostrich Races, I want to talk about singing when the emotion hits harder than you expected. Standing on the Storey County Fire Truck, hearing the announcer remember September 11, honor our military, and recognize the first responders protecting our communities through the local fires… it was a LOT. Then it was my turn to sing the National Anthem. I was praying while I sang. Asking God to help me put all that love, gratitude, and emotion into the song without breaking down halfway through. I didn’t want to feel LESS. I wanted to be able to sing what I was feeling. That’s a part of live performance we don’t always talk about. Sometimes the challenge isn’t the audience or the high note. It’s what the song means to you in that moment. And if you do tear up, that doesn’t erase your preparation or make you less of a singer. We’re people holding microphones—not machines. ❤️ What song gets you emotional, even when you’ve sung it a hundred times?

It’s the three people on the couch that make me think too much. 😂🎤 When it comes to singing in front of people, I’d rather have a big audience than a tiny group sitting right in front of me. Anybody else backward like that? 😂 As I get ready to sing the National Anthem at the International Camel and Ostrich Races today, September 13, I’ve been thinking about how different singing confidence can look for each of us. One person feels comfortable at church but freezes at karaoke. Another sings freely at home—until somebody walks into the room. That’s worth talking about here in Sing It Like You Mean It. Learning to trust your voice isn’t only about the notes. It’s also noticing when you start holding yourself back and what you’re worried someone might hear. You don’t have to set “sing for 500 people” as your goal. Letting one trusted person hear a song might be a meaningful step for you. My next audience happens to come with camels and ostriches.
