TODAY'S ASSIGNMENT Today is the day to finish your outline or production model. SCREENWRITERS: Complete Your Outline. Your goal today is a complete, workable outline that provides a clear path to writing or revising your screenplay. Step 1: Finish your remaining story beats and scenes. Review your outline and make sure you've accounted for the major events from beginning to end. Fill in any missing sequences, unresolved plot points, or underdeveloped sections. Step 2: Review your character arcs and story progression. Make a final pass through your outline, checking: - Does your protagonist have a clear goal, motivation, and meaningful obstacles? - Do the character's decisions shape the story's direction? - Does the conflict build and evolve? - Are the major turning points effective for your intended story? - Does the resolution address the central conflict? FILMMAKERS: Finalize Your Scope & Production Model Your goal today is to finish your preliminary production plan that reflects the realities of your project and gives you a practical starting point. Step 1: Confirm your project's scope. Finalize your project's format, runtime, number of scenes or episodes, cast requirements, locations, technical needs, and post-production requirements. Step 2: Confirm your production model. Review the production model you selected. Make sure it aligns with your anticipated budget, available team, equipment, timeline, and financing strategy. Document any outstanding decisions or assumptions that still need verification. Step 3: Review your production requirements. Create a list of what you know now & what you have: - Essential cast and crew. - Locations, sets, props, and equipment. - Budget categories and anticipated expenses. - Production phases and estimated timelines. - Funding, partnerships, or resources. - Post-production requirements and delivery format.

The mistake many StoryTellers (screenwriters/filmmakers) make is trying to build a career on the back of one script or film. While one script or film can get you in front of agents, managers, producers, and buyers, it just gets you in the door. Without more scripts or projects at least in mind, how will you answer the question: "What else are you working on?" A key to success is having a portfolio. Finished scripts, ideas for more scripts, completed films (any format), and ideas for your next project. The more scripts you write and the more projects you make, make you a better StoryTeller. While one script or film can be a breakout piece, what's your plan after your big break? Multiple scripts or projects give you something to leverage in these meetings. Having more projects lets people know you are serious and someone they can build a relationship with. So, StoryTellers, take your time to build your portfolio; it's a key to building the career you want.
