The money side of running golf leagues: what’s worked for us
What I've learned about the money side of running golf leagues - Indoors & Outdoors I've run my own league (Almost Athletes) for years and built software that about 20 other leagues use. The thing that causes the most headaches isn't scoring. It's the money. A few things that have worked for us: 1. Decide the payout split before sign-ups open, and publish it. "Prizes based on participation" is fine, but say exactly how: a % of entries, the 1st/2nd/3rd split, and what happens if fewer teams sign up than you planned. 2. Keep side games (CTP, skins) in a separate pot from the purse. When they're mixed, nobody can follow the math, and that's when players start asking questions. 3. Balance it every week, not at the end. Money in should equal prizes paid plus carryovers plus the house. If it doesn't balance in week 3, it won't magically balance in week 8. 4. Post results fast. A recap on Monday morning keeps people booking. One on Thursday feels like nobody's paying attention. 5.No refunds for those that quit during the league season. Make sure your rules are clearly spelled out. What I'm still working out: how indoor owners handle late rounds. Do you give a hard deadline and forfeit, allow extensions, or let the opponent win? Curious what's working for you.

@Joshua Kauck - That's awesome. Real-time standings mid-round is a big upgrade from the usual wait-until-Monday. We're on SGT too and ended up building on top of it for the same reason: the stock tools stop at scoring, and everything around it (sign-ups, who's paid, skins and side pots, the recap) was the real work. I'm currently working on a real-time standings update for a couple of clients that started with weekly and want to move to real-time. Would be fun to compare notes sometime on what you've automated and what still trips you up. Congrats on the launch!

@Joshua Kauck Ran into the exact same wall with my own platforms. Fairway Circuit (golf leagues) and a fantasy football app I built. Every processor that would touch prize money wanted the same expensive legal setup, and it wasn't worth it. So I went the other way: the software never touches the money. Leagues collect offline or through the facility's own POS as league registration, and the platform just tracks who's paid and does the payout math. Players and owners haven't minded, and it keeps the whole thing out of gambling-processor territory. For a national tour collecting from players directly, I can see why that's harder. Not a lawyer, so that's just what's worked for me. Curious if any of the processors you talked to had a lighter option.

Built Fairway Circuit to run my own league; 20+ leagues now use it. I automate indoor golf league work for owners. Free sample week: grayhq.ai/leagues
