The Real Blocker (Safety vs Confidence)
I’m noticing a pattern in this community. Most people don’t hesitate to travel solo because they don’t want to… They hesitate because they’re unsure they’ll be safe. New place New decisions No built-in safety net That hesitation makes sense. But here’s what I’ve seen again and again — confidence doesn’t come before the first trip. It builds because of it. Most solo travelers don’t start fearless. They start cautious. ..Prepared. ...Aware. Then something shifts. Curious — what holds you back more right now: Safety concerns or Confidence going alone?

When I travel solo, I take the same safety precautions I take in the US. Situational awareness is important. One tip: Always have your valuables and important documents on your person, including when you are on an airplane. Do not put in a backpack or tote bag. At the hotel, you can put them in a safe, although I never had problems at the hotels I stayed in and would put my documents in a drawer.

Yes, I have a few hard copies with me and put them also as photos on my phone. It takes only a few minutes.

I’m a new member. I’m a pretty experienced traveler. I tend to indulge in long stays and cruises for particular destinations, including Greece, northern Italy, Canadian Maritimes, Tucson and New York City. I also regularly plan stays on the Connecticut shoreline, especially when air travel is difficult. I hope I can contribute to the success of the group.

Sante Fe in spring, Montreal or Maine in summer, Savannah or Northern California in late September, and Puerto Rico in winter. For me, summer starts in early May and extends through mid September
Safety Builds Confidence
If you're honest — what part of solo travel makes you hesitate most? • getting around safely • airport logistics • being alone • language barriers • something else A lot of solo travel confidence actually comes from feeling prepared. Simple things make a big difference: • choosing walkable central areas • arranging airport transfers ahead of time • sharing your itinerary • keeping copies of documents • starting with traveler-friendly destinations These don’t make travel complicated they make it calmer. And calm leads to confidence. This is also why many people start with: • shorter trips • nearby destinations • or small group travel first You build experience You build awareness You build trust in yourself Then traveling alone stops feeling risky…and starts feeling freeing.

@Michele March You should try Istanbul airport trying to get to a connecting flight. The old airport in 2018 had a full scale shopping mall, not just a few shops, smack in the middle, one had to pass through. And then there are their extensive security measures, which are needed.

There are a few airlines I try not to use anymore, such as Southwest and Turkish Airlines. Lack of convenience, discomfort, changing gates at the last minute and poor customer service are the reasons.
