Justice Is Not Always Fair
Card XI Justice asks a deeper question than whether something is simply fair. It speaks of justice, of balance, of society’s rules and the agreements we are expected to honor. In a world built on laws, norms, and decisions made both by us and for us, Justice reminds us that what feels fair on a personal level is not always the same as what society considers just. There is more to it than that, though. After going through an inner process in cards 1 to 9 of the Major Arcana, we come to a turning point with 10, Wheel of Fortune — the beginning of a new phase, but now together with everyone around us. The awareness that my rules may work for me, but perhaps are not in balance with society, and that society has rules that may seem completely crazy to me. Both in the big picture and in everyday life — because maybe you do not like getting a parking ticket when you parked wrong, stayed too long, or simply did not pay. Society, however, says that is how it should be. Unfortunately, many people see XI Justice as a divorce card, which I do not entirely agree with unless the card appears reversed. To me, it is more about marriage — an agreement entered into between two people, but one where society is the one making the final decision. To get married is not something we can do without having our legal right to marry approved by society, and then the person officiating the ceremony must also be approved by society. So decisions and agreements with this card mean that at least two parties are involved, along with society’s decision-makers. The same applies to divorce, when an agreement is to be broken — society’s approval is still needed for it to be valid. Justice can also be about tests — tests of patience, of decision-making, and of trust. In The Rune Witch Tarot, the astrological symbol is Sagittarius, the sign that more than any other seeks justice and truth. The rune is Naudiz, the need rune, which speaks of the consequences of decisions. The crystal is Hematite, the stone of protection, balance, and the grounding needed to stand steady.

I studied these concepts in Business Law and Ethics at my university just this week, so reading this felt like a wonderful synchronicity.🥰 I love the distinction between what feels personally fair and what society recognizes as just. It reminds me that Justice is not (only) the external judge but also and not only an archetype that mediates between the individual and the collective. We indeed all carry our own inner judge, preaching and preserving our own inner laws, yet living together requires another layer of order. Perhaps the real challenge of this card is learning to hold both truths at once without reducing one to the other. What struck me most is the idea that Justice is not a scale measuring innocence or guilt, but a bridge between the individual and the collective. We often confuse fairness with agreement, yet life continually reminds us that they are different things. Every choice enters a larger web of causes, consequences, and relationships. The card does not merely ask, "Is this fair?" It asks, "What kind of world does this decision help create?" To me, that's where Justice truly comes alive.....not as punishment or reward, but as the ongoing search for balance between personal conscience and our shared responsibility to one another. this reminds me the fact that I am not religious but for me God in its essence can be called JUSTICE. Something greater than me that has to come before me, being it my own creation to romanticize this existence or not!!! Thanks a lot for this opportunity to deepen and remember this concept, so precious to me!!!!! your point on marriage: I also like Justice to marriage, not divorce....and there are societies that allow it with very unfair ways. We end up judging them as barbaric and destructive. This to say that for them that is legal but it's far from fair and balanced.

@Ylva Trollstierna Cause and effect: that is a really good message for justice~ I usually would say many things, so maybe I will comment about that when my saturnian and jupiterian big sides speak to me~ it's responsability, it's building relationships with self and others... it's many things 🥰🥰🥰🥰love it!!!
