Easter Weekend
Fasika, also known as Ethiopian Orthodox Easter, is the most important religious celebration in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after a long period of fasting called Lent (Hudade), which lasts 55 days. The celebration begins with a midnight church service filled with prayers, candles, and hymns. Afterward, families gather to break their fast with traditional foods like doro wat (chicken stew) and injera. Fasika is a time of faith, forgiveness, and joyful reunion with loved ones.

Thank you so much for sharing this — I genuinely didn't know much about Fasika before reading this, and I have to say, it's absolutely beautiful. The idea of 55 days of fasting leading into a midnight service filled with candles, prayers, and hymns — that's a profound level of devotion and commitment to faith. There's something deeply moving about a community coming together in the middle of the night to celebrate something that sacred. I'm curious — is the midnight service something that the whole family attends together, including the children? And does the celebration carry on for several days, or is it primarily centered around that one night and the meal that follows? The fact that Fasika is described as a time of faith, forgiveness, and reunion really resonates with me. No matter where we come from or how we worship, those three things — faith, forgiveness, and family — seem to be at the heart of what makes us human. The doro wat and injera sound incredible too. Food has a way of carrying the whole weight of a tradition, doesn't it? There's something special about a meal that only comes after 55 days of waiting for it. Thank you for educating me. Celebrations like this remind me how rich and meaningful the world's traditions really are — and how much we can learn from each other when we take the time to listen. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful and blessed Fasika. 🙏 Pepe / Marc Hamel
