Favourite Classical Guitar Players
Who are you’re favourite Classical Guitar players and why? My favourites are Julian Bream for his heartfelt performances, Marcin Dylla for his wonderful phrasing and space, and finally Pavel Steidl for his personality and connection.

I wish that I had the basics to be able to make meaningful comparisons. Right now, I kinda live in the world of YouTube and edited videos, and most guitarists that I see come through that particular lens. That being said, I sat right in front of Hao Yang when she played a concert at the New York Classical Guitar Society last year, and she blew me away. Stephanie Jones is someone who impresses me, but I only know her through YouTube, and as I mentioned above, I take any YouTube video with a grain of salt. I think that Julia Malischke plays some really exciting material (the YouTube comment applies here as well).

I also enjoy watching Vera Danilina, although her gestures and facial expressions could be a distraction sometimes. I love when classical guitarists show some sort of emotion in concert instead of presenting a stone face and mechanically strumming away. But sometimes Vera can go a little bit overboard. I also cannot judge the quality of her playing ... she didn't reach the final round in last year's GFA, but maybe tht was due to the memory slips she had in the semis?

I would love a session on trills. I am playing Bach's Sarabande from BWV 1004 (inspired by Hilary Hahn), and I never know what the best way is to perform the trills ... and there are several in that piece. It's always so confusing because there are so many interpretations of how to do a proper Bach trill.

The Best Metronome App That I Have Found
Last week, completely by accident, I stumbled upon this web-based metronome app, and I have to say that it contains all of the features that I ever wanted in a metronome app. It is the only one that I have seen that can speed up the metronome gradually in a non-linear fashion. It also supports slowing down the metronome automatically. It has lots of rhythms that you can play along with, and it contains a variety of click sounds. You can switch between French and English. I only wish there were a version of this that was an iOS app. Bravo to the author. www.metronome-en-ligne.com
Recording of Live Technique Session 30/10/25
Here is the recording of the live session which you can follow along with - unfortunately I think the SKOOL streaming system filters out the guitar pretty strongly so will use ZOOM for future classes - I hope you can still understand what was happening well enough and get some value from this video in any case - but future classes the guitar audio will be totally clear. Thanks Stewart As always please comment with any questions you may have about anything being covered :)

Thanks for doing this, Stewart. I thought that there might have been an opportunity for me to show you my current state of barred pull-offs, but maybe next time.
