Tonight I tried a fantasy-style writing prompt I discovered inside Skill and Soul Studio on S-K-O-O-L. It felt mystical, creative, and a little unexpected — but it reminded me that memoir writing isn’t always linear. The job was for Modern Salon magazine, and it paid $1,800, which felt like a fortune to me at the time. When I arrived at the studio, they told me they were going to cut my hair. I hesitated for a second, but then I thought, For $1,800...ok.

In our community, our mascot is the owl—wise, watchful, and always present. The owl reminds us that even in quiet moments, someone is looking out for us, guiding us, and helping us find our way. I feel incredibly blessed that about four weeks ago I met Rachel, the founder of the Skool Bookshop community, right when she had just started it—and right when I was just beginning to seriously write my memoir. Since then, we’ve somehow connected almost daily around the craft of writing. And what I’ve realized is this: writing is an endless craft.
