Sorry for the delay on the posting today! Today is a International holiday for the whole Spanish-speaking world! On October 12th, 1492, Columbus’s ships ⛵ reached the Caribbean 🏝️. Today, this date means very different things across the Spanish-speaking world. Spain celebrates its Fiesta Nacional, also called Día de la Hispanidad, with a military parade 🎖️ in Madrid and the festival of the Virgen del Pilar in Zaragoza 🎊. Some Spaniards dislike the name because the Franco dictatorship promoted it. 🌎 Latin America once called it Día de la Raza, but many countries have changed the name: 🇦🇷 Argentina celebrates Cultural Diversity, 🇨🇱 Chile the Meeting of Two Worlds, 🇻🇪 Venezuela Indigenous Resistance, and 🇧🇴 Bolivia Decolonization. The focus has moved from “discovery” 🔍 to Indigenous peoples 🪶. ☀️ The lights: about 500 million native speakers 🗣️ share a language, and the mix of European, Indigenous and African cultures created unique food 🌮, music 🎶 and literature 📚. 🌑 The shadows: the conquest brought violence ⚔️, slavery ⛓️, deadly diseases 🦠 and the loss of many Indigenous cultures 💔. The debate is still alive: Columbus statues 🗿 have been removed in Buenos Aires and Mexico City. October 12th is a day of pride for some and of pain for others 🕯️. The honest way to remember it is to celebrate what we share 💛 without forgetting its price ⚖️.
