What’s the most affordable brand of silver clay you have found?

I prefer Art Clay Silver because it’s completely reliable and I know what to expect. I haven’t tried any of the new ones (I just don’t feel the need).

@Marte Phillip I did attend a class in France with an American teacher years ago. We used bronze and copper. Pieces were fired in carbon. Nothing worked - she blamed the kilns; the sea level (we were near the beach) and queried where we’d bought the clay. Most of us had bought it directly from her. She was rude and didn’t even thank the host or the person who made use a wonderful lunch each day. I knew someone who’d done the same class in the UK so I asked and the same happened there. I did a wonderful Art Clay Mokume Gane certification course in the Netherlands and it was completely the opposite - we all made successful pieces (and I ended up with green cuticles from the copper). I did use the art clay copper when I was teaching the diploma courses and taught a couple of different people the Mokume Gane - it’s a very long time ago (more than 10 years - before I moved house). I haven’t used the copper for years and not tried any of the other metal clays

@Alice Watton I found the base metal clays tricky although I haven’t tried any of the recent ones. Copper makes my fingers turn green ☹️
Kiln cherry finally popped!
Guess who has finally popped their kiln 🍒!!!!! Eeeek. After staring at it for a couple of months I've finally bitten the bullet and gone for it! I'm waiting for everything to cool down before I go near it now. :) so excited but also terrified. I feel like I don't know what I'm doing half the time but so far I've been able to successfully torch fire silver with no mistakes. Now I'm using my kiln to try copper clay!

I have the Prometheus Pro 1 (and I’ve had quite a few over the years). I had the bigger Prometheus Pro7 but one of my friends bought it from me because she teaches a lot of enamelling classes (so she wanted 2). I do enamelling and silver clay

Where are you Patricia?
Thank you for my membership.
I am a Danish detector archaeologist who wants to recreate some of the things we find with a metal detector. Is there a method to dilute the clay so that you can make a liquid cold cast and then heat it up with a gas burner or perhaps in a microwave kiln?
Thank you for my membership.

@Tony Bülow no Tony, sorry. He cut out and engraved the big copper backplate and enamelled it. The figure was cast at Ravstedhus and then the piece were assembled and guilded - again by Flemming at Ravstedhus. I haven’t seen the actual thing and I can’t remember where the museum is. They have made smaller ones to sell too. I did do some Art Clay Silver classes there (before Brexit). Tom Lundsten teaches enamelling there occasionally (he’s from Koge)

I can’t read this but just took it from Tom’s description and it is from 2 years ago I think. The cross will still be in the museum
Soldering made easy? I just LOOKED easy lol
I've just seen a YouTube video of a person using silver solder paste to solder a copper jump ring using a torch (like our firing torches). It looked too easy? He didn't appear to use flux or any probes or anything. Just quenched pickled and polished it after. Is it actually THAT simple? Why do I see soldering kits with probes , various fluids etc? Thank you.

A flux of some kind is useful to keep the join clean when you’ve prepared it. I think it stops it oxidising before the solder has flowed and made the join. I don’t use paste solder - I don’t like the ‘fumes’ that come off it and I find it more difficult to estimate how much to use. With a little ‘chip’ of the strip solder you know exactly how much you’re using. I use borax flux - it comes in a solid cone and you grind it in a dish to make a ‘fluid’. Are you in the UK (I know you can’t buy it in Denmark).
