My Reactive Dogs
Boy are these videos helpful. No other trainer I consulted started off with the basics like this. It was straight to sit, stay, etc. and I completely missed engagement. So I have another questions. My ex and I foolishly got two puppies (now 7 years old) and they are insanely bonded. How do I get them to work with me one on one when they freak out at being separated? If I keep one indoor or out in the pen, he/she will bark and howl for the other one, and the one with me is more interested in their brother/sister than in me. Do you have any tips or strategies to address this basic issue first? I'm going to try working on engagement when I HAPPEN to have one in or out without the other because they want to, but I know I'll make more headway if I have a strategy to get them to accept being separated when I want to. By they way, I'm no good with videos, but here are Max (the littler yellow one) and Terra (likely a pitlab mix). They are 7 years old and huge lovebugs, but have major anxiety and behavior issues. It's bad enough that I've considered having to surrender them as I can't have company and can't leave them with a petsitter - and my ex has abandoned them. :-(

The ecollar isn't an option because they are trained on an invisible fence and both know to avoid the PLACE where they got zapped. One zap in a newly designated area, and they don't go back, so an ecollar for NO would simply confuse them. The thing is, they are smart. I managed to grab them both at a time when they had chosen to be separated (one wanted out, one wanted in) and did a quickie engagement session. They both got it really well. I had stumbled on Look the other day (another one trainers I had worked with years ago never bothered with - I can't remember if it was one of your videos or someone else's) and Max (who doesn't Look naturally; Terra already does) put it together with Look himself, and was looking right at me to try and get the next piece of food. I need to spend a week reinforcing the follow part of it with YES, but I feel like I CAN do this, when a week ago I was feeling like fixing things with them was impossible. So thank you for giving me a glimmer of hope. :-)

Reactivity: who else here struggles with their dog's reactivity. Could be towards people, other dogs, bikes, squirrels you name it. Comment here and we can get a discussion going on what works, what doesn't work and I'll teach you guys my whole process for actually fixing it. @Aj Ryan

My dogs are insanely reactive to strangers. One runs and hides and the other goes into attack mode. I know I'm supposed to have people come to desensitize them, but that isn't feasible, so I"m stuck.

@Jeff Thomson This was SUPER helpful!! I'm going to go and look at that Engagement Building Video. And I already know the game that will work with my aggressive dog. My fearful one isn't a game player, she's more food motivated, so I need to figure out how to make that a game, I think... PLEASE KEEP SHARING!!!

Just getting my dog to be calm would be a huge win. He is already on prozac and trazodone, but simply can't contain himself...
