Freedom to Leave Unhappy or Unsafe Marriages
š·Women Herstory Monthš· Because of Her, I Can Choose Peace Just a few decades ago, leaving a marriage was not as simple as deciding you deserved peace. Before the rise of no-fault divorce laws beginning in 1969, many women had to stand in court and prove cruelty, abandonment, or adultery just to be granted the right to leave. Private pain often had to become public testimony. For many women, especially those without financial independence, staying felt like the only option. Then laws slowly began to change, allowing women to dissolve marriages without assigning blame. That shift restored dignity. Today women can walk away from relationships that threaten their safety, peace, or identity. The freedom to choose well-being over endurance has transformed countless lives. What once required evidence now requires courageāand that courage has opened the door to healing, rebuilding, and living authentically. šAfrican Proverb āA peaceful home is better than a palace filled with trouble.ā šSouthern African-American Saying / Folktale Wisdom āGrandmama used to say, āPeace of mind is worth more than staying somewhere youāre not loved.āā šCaribbean / Jamaican Proverb āBetter fi walk alone than walk wid bad company.ā šReflection: Leave a comment What does freedom look like for you in this season of your life? ā
