I decided to open up the first process video to all members. Check it out! 👀 Your mini challenge this week is to create a painting (any size) with three colors plus white. No time limit. Limiting our color palette helps us create more color harmony in our paintings.
@Becky Gilles You could actually pull out your focal point even more in this piece. Many times I try to have the highest contrast area (darkest dark and lightest light) in my focal point to draw your eye to that section. You can also use more neutrals/desaturated color throughout much of the piece, and use saturated colors in the focal point to draw it out. Another way you can put emphasis on the focal point is by having hard edges there and softer edges elsewhere. I’m hoping to get another video posted before the week is over. Maybe I’ll demonstrate these three methods of pulling out a focal point. I find composition to be the hardest part of abstract painting.
Create a very small abstract (maybe 4x6 or 5x7) using just three colors in no more than 3 minutes. Post your results in the comments. Complete the challenge as many times as you'd like. This will help you loosen up and be more intuitive with your pieces since there’s a time limit. Each week from now on, I will be posting the challenge on Sundays. Next week’s challenge will build on this one.
