Daily Music Diary Mix
So one thing I’ve gotten into over the last few years is making a song-a-day mix. I got the idea from ex-MTV host Dave Holmes, and all you do is pick one song each day… something you hear, something you think of, something tied to an event/news item/personal milestone, etc. and you just keep building over 365. At the end of each year (or each month, even) not only do you have a sweet - and often very random! - mix but afterwards you can look back on it and re-live the time… be it “oh yeah, that’s the day I watched ____” or “I was out at my local and this song just hit the moment perfectly!” Just sharing in case anyone here wants to give it a go moving forward! Or maybe you do it too? If anyone is interested, here’s how my year started (and, yes, thank you @John Richards for more than a couple of these!) https://music.apple.com/ca/playlist/01-january-2026/pl.u-b3b84WNUbAvLP https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6LhKcbjOy0CkY4mJFazeCT

@Shane McNeil just got home from the show. Honestly Sharp Pins knocked my socks off. They were amazing! Definitely seeing them again ASAP. Snail Mail also exceeded my expectations though TBH I went to see them in support of a friend and was pleasantly surprised. She is so very talented and gracious. It was a very good concert night.

@Shane McNeil I’m sure the Tami Lynn track came up when I was listening to The Pointer Sisters adjacent artists. Yo La Tengo has my heart. I see those guys every time they come around and will forever explore their music catalog.
I saw this in another group and thought this group would like it
Greatest one line in a song ever, not a verse, chorus or bridge. Let's hear 'em

@Adrian Doran indeed, every single line of every single Tom Waits song is the best line. 👏👏👏 The Rain Dogs album was my first exposure to him and the song 9th & Hennepin had me laid out on the floor with a notebook writing out the lyrics so I could think about every turn of phrase. Probably the least profound line in that song is “All the donuts have names that sound like prostitutes” and it’s still so illuminatory, I spent an inexcusable amount of time writing out donut names and imagining the escort’s matching persona.
Song?
Drop one song in the comments and don’t explain why. Go!

Songs that feel like hope
Title says it all. What song (currently - no wrong answer, repeat answers allowed) feels like hope to you? For me, right now, it's this track called "Hold On" by French 79. This came out in.. 2020 I think? maybe 2019, but regardless, it was there for 2020. The whole album was there, but this song in particular. There was more than just COVID going on for for me, which I could go into, but not tonight. Point being, this song was there for me. I just now pulled up the video for the first time so I could post it here, and holy shit but this even hits harder. I was totally a skater as a kid, and even rode goofy foot. Nostalgia and hope wrapped into one. Perfect. Post your track too if you can - I wanna hear it all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgBBCzi7Kpc

My inclination is to blow this post up with hundreds of songs. Ear candy hopeful songs have been my elixir these last many months. However I’ll fight my urge and share this one. Dream Machine by DJ Mark Farina. https://youtu.be/dEjtZXPYHzY?si=Nmx2LKtd2TqAGIDj

First concert - INXS (1987 - Illinois State University Student Union) Last concert - Real Estate (Jan. 15 Vivarium - Milwaukee) Best Concert - Yo La Tengo - First concert after the pandemic lockdown. It was outside in the rain. Maybe it was raindrops on all the faces, but I think it was tears. Worst concert - Modest Mouse - it was a terrible venue, the sound was awful Loudest concert - Naked Raygun Best sounding - Eels (2014 - Sheldon Concert Hall - St. Louis) Seen the most - Yo La Tengo Most surprising - Babe Rainbow Most unusual - TV on the Radio - the entire audience of the Pabst Theater was arm in arm singing Careful You. It was magical and like nothing I’d ever seen. Craziest - The Replacements - last show together where they broke up mid performance Next Concert - Couch Dog Wish I had seen - Talking Heads

@Sean Stuart @Shane McNeil and @Marco Mazzoni all three of you have mentioned Say She She here. I’ve never heard of them, but I gather I should queue them up based on this show of hands. I’ll make Say She She this afternoon’s listening party. 🎧🎶
