I’m new to this, don’t have any equipment but would love to get started on my iPad, what’s the best way to go about this?

Hey Brendan! Happy to have you here. If you head to the classroom and start watching the course content, you’ll be able to learn the science behind playing two tracks together (and making it work). The course is optimized for Rekordbox (the industry standard DJ software) which is best on a laptop. Nonetheless, I’m sure you can find free solutions on the App Store for your iPad. DM me if you need any more help :)

Library Organization
I’ve just finished lesson 4 and it gave some very useful information. But my biggest obstacle has actually been with my library organization. I have confidence in my song selection but struggle to find and play new songs while mixing live. I feel that my main issue is that I’m not able to organize my library correctly and have many different variety songs I like in one playlist. I’m not able to come up with a strategy to organize my music so that my playlist are more cohesive and I’m able to play a bigger variety of music instead of resorting to the same songs i usually play. Is there any advice to tidy up my library?

The biggest piece of advice is that this won’t be quick. This will take time. One of the things I always say is to organize by energy, but in some cases, energy feels different at different times. The best way to see if two tracks fit together is to play them together and make the transition and see if it sticks. They can have the same mood but one of them might have hi hats or certain elements that bring more or less energy. Over time you will get to understand your tracks much more and have a feel of what they can do over headphones vs in a big club room. Using the Tag feature on Pioneer equipment is a great way to quickly put a mental note on tracks that you think might work well together. Try this: - Go into your collection and start playing tracks, making transactions between each - As you start to see tracks that align together, write down the name or use the tag feature (on pro Pioneer DJ equipment). - When practicing don’t be afraid to play the same song again until you find a song that works well with it. You will learn what elements this song carries and what kind of elements the next songs might need to introduce to smoothly transition. In many cases varied percussion sounds between tracks, that hit on different notes can make the swing of the tracks feel very off. - When playing live, if you play on pro Pioneer DJ equipment, your USB will get populated with a HISTORY file. Here you can see all the tracks you played in order. - If you realize two tracks work when testing out for the first time live, do check your history files and make a mental note of it. With so many tracks and artists and an ever growing collection, it’s very easy to lose focus on what’s what. Once you get the mood/feeling down, you can notice that tracks can do multiple things in multiple contexts. You could play a tune once in a more mellow setting and once again in a more energetic one, and it just works. You can play the same track at different BPM and it can feel different.
