I'm in a plateau with painting right now. You know that phase where the newness wears off? Where you're not improving as fast as you were at the beginning, and the dopamine hit of "ooh I learned something new today" is gone? I'm there with painting. This is exactly where most people bail. They think "maybe this isn't for me" or "maybe I should try something else." But here's how I know I'm not done with painting yet, I'm still curious! I'm not painting much right now, but the other day I made watercolor paint from binder and pigments. Sometimes I make mark-making tools. I'm just not doing "the" thing, but I'm still playing around the edges. That's how I know. The passion is still there just expressed differently. When I'm ACTUALLY done with a medium, I don't think about it at all. I don't tinker, I don't experiment, I just move on. So if you're in a plateau right now, ask yourself: Am I still curious about this art somehow? If yes → you're not done, just in the boring middle keep pressing on! If no → maybe it's time to evolve, and that's okay too.
