This recognition means so much because it reflects the heart behind everything I do—not just taking photographs, but helping people see themselves with confidence, authenticity, and purpose. When I created Photography by Cristal, my dream wasn't simply to capture beautiful images. It was to create a welcoming space where people feel seen, celebrated, and remembered. To everyone who has trusted me with their story, stepped in front of my camera, supported my communities, or encouraged me along this journey—thank you. This award belongs to all of us. If I had to describe my dad's influence on me in one word, it would be: everything. When I was 12 years old, he gave me a choice. I could have an Alva skateboard or a professional portfolio. Both cost $500. I chose the portfolio. That one decision changed my life forever. I never paid for photos again. By age 12, I was already getting paid to model for a mannequin company in New York. Yes, they actually made a mannequin of me! Looking back, that was the beginning of an incredible journey. My dad's own story was extraordinary. He was born in India and later moved back to the UK with his family. He often talked about how magical life in India had been, surrounded by family, nannies, and cooks. But life changed dramatically after that, and he experienced tremendous loss and hardship, including losing his father at only 57 years old. He was then raised by his mum and gran in the UK. He came to Hollywood in 1965 and spent years in the music industry. Our home had more than 2,000 albums on the shelves. Music was everywhere, and creativity filled every corner of our lives. It inspired me deeply. The man who raised me taught me to dream big, take chances, and believe that creativity could open doors. My biological father also left an incredible legacy. He passed away in Maui, Hawaii, in 2012. He was an exceptional photographer and graphic artist who was truly ahead of his time. He created the cover for Omni Magazine in 1984 and inspired me with his artistry and imagination. Looking back, I realize I inherited a love of creativity, storytelling, and visual art from both fathers in different ways. That $500 portfolio wasn't just an investment in pictures. I got removed from a community this week by the owner because I accidentally broke the self-promotion rules multiple times. I made a mistake. Actually, I made the same mistake more than once. It hurt. A lot. I never intended to disrespect anyone's community or create extra work for the owner. I genuinely misunderstood the guidelines and kept getting it wrong. Something I don't talk about often is that I have a learning disability. Sometimes I struggle to process or remember instructions and social expectations. It's not an excuse, and I take responsibility for my mistakes, but it is part of my reality. I felt embarrassed, sad, and disappointed in myself. But I'm sharing this because I know I'm not the only one who has made mistakes, misunderstood something, or felt like I didn't fit in. This experience reminded me that being human means getting things wrong sometimes. It means apologizing, learning, and continuing forward with a little more wisdom and a lot more compassion for ourselves and others. I'm still here. I'm still building. I'm still learning. And if you've ever felt like you messed up, got rejected, or didn't understand something everyone else seemed to get—you're not alone. 💛
