Congratulations to Kim for getting accepted into a residency, to Robyn for being pursued by past collectors for more work, and to Deb for breaking through limiting beliefs about self worth into a phase of freedom and empowerment! And thank you for listening to my own commission situation mid-processing, that was vulnerable for me and a very good exercise. I realize I don't like to share until I have figured out the answers. That being in community is difficult for me. It's hard to show up messy, but I am working on holding myself in the discomfort of being seen in the fullness of being human. And you are providing me with a safe space. Thanks to all who came to the meeting! If you listen later feel free to share any insights or questions. -FF

@Felicia Forte good god, I got all balled up inside reading his messages. Wow. Your response was perfect (you choose your language with such intention - it's a great example). I appreciate this process insight deeply as I've reluctantly re-opened my calendar for commission work after a good long hiatus. This is the part that I despise, navigating communicating with people who are unaware they have omitted half of their own expectations. The majority of my clients are delightful, but it's the ones who can't process or retain what they read, respond with clarity, or follow basic directions that make me want to knock my head against the wall. Finish her and have a lovely sending off cleansing ritual.

@Felicia Forte ohh, this is so so good. I think some of my uncertainty is rooted in the perception that I'm not enough in some way - which as you know I am working on. But yeah, where is that threshold of pushing myself to grow and let me make sure that I am nudging it forward at appropriate times. I need to think about this further so that I can be intentional with my language. It is a complex question. Am I bored? I think that might be part of it, that the surprise element I value so much has gotten swallowed up by familiarity......

Art school. MFAs. The academic system. I was just chatting with Robyn about it. About how a friend of mine just got hired as a sculpture professor though they are a photographer..... but they are alumni. I have some frustration about this. Over the years I have been parallel on my path to friends who chose the academic route for their artist journey. I have cultivated my curiosity about the differences in our paths, believing that there are many ways to be an artist (human really). I have come to see the systems in the art world, academia being a big one- as doing something other than art. I think artists survive within and throughout the systems but that it breeds other creatures as well. Anyhow. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Here's a blog article featuring my work from a few years back.

@Felicia Forte I romanticized the school/making aspect of it. Like working all day long in the studio (as a student) - and not having to do anything else but think about art and then make it. I also never had a realistic view of the difference between art school and real world working artist - silly me thought that art school (MFA) would give me the connections so that i could just hide in the studio and do my thing.

@Felicia Forte I talk to Quantum Kim quite a bit. What do you suppose Quantum Felicia is like?
I've been applying to things recently.
It's been a while, and a tough road to feel secure enough to apply for some types of opportunities - like the Macdowell Colony Residency, Headlands Grant here in the Bay Area, or The Pollack Krasner grant. I've been trying to flesh out how I support this career, using all the opportunities available. First I had to break beliefs I'd created to keep me safe, limiting beliefs... to do this. I used to say "I'm independent and that's what's great about me", and that's true as long as it doesn’t become a shield protecting me from getting what I need. The help that wasn't available earlier in life when I had no knowledge or skill to ask for it. We survive- but we must not identify so strongly with our survival skills that they hinder us when we no longer need them. Im seeing a story of a man alone in the wilderness for twenty years... imagine the skills and tools he develops. One day survival is easy but he's lonely... he goes to town. That's gonna be an adjustment!! You hear someone approaching... probably don't assume it's a bear. Something like that. Who else is applying? What are you experiencing? Ps. Robyn I did take your advice and apply for some smaller opportunities. Great idea, thank you.
