Hey Anthony! Thank you so much for answering my question. I feel somehow relieved realizing it can take a while to develop the fishhook 😅 It's not an easy movement and I was almost getting a bit frustrated by practicing all afternoon.
Live Q&A Questions
In a little over 15 hours from now, we'll be having our first Q&A and I couldn't be more excited!!! So far i've had 3 questions: - how to play cymbals with brushes - how to change from brushes to sticks and back - how to approach paradiddles For those of you that can make it, you'll find the link in the calendar tab, but for those that cannot then please post your questions below and I'll do my best to answer.

So nice of you to take some time for us! Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it. I would like to ask a question though, if I may. I was wondering if you could show us how to play the fishhook in matched grip (unless it's already somewhere and I haven't seen or found it yet, of course). I'm having some trouble doing it and I do like the traditional grip, but I also like the idea of symmetry, meaning to practice things the other way around sometimes, for example play the cymbals mainly with the left hand and snare/backbeat with the right hand. So for that matter, matched is an easy way to be able to switch the guiding hand, and thus the hand techniques, quickly. I hope that's somewhat coherent 😅 Thanks a lot and have a good Q&A session!
Welcome!
Let's get to know each other! Comment below sharing where you are in the world, a photo of your favourite snare drum, and something you like to do for fun. 😊 I'll go first - I live in Melbourne Australia, my favourite snare is the Gretsch 2mm Copper 14x5 (with Kentville Kangaroo Head) and I love long-distance running 🏃‍♂️

Hello, everyone! My name is Kevin, I live in Switzerland near Lucerne and, as everybody else, I would like to improve my brush skills on the drums 😊 I am a forester by profession and so I do very much enjoy the outdoors, having long walks in the woods or just be in nature generally. Other than that and playing drums, I love to ‚refurbish‘ them. Meaning I enjoy taking old drums apart and putting new veneer on, maybe new lugs and/or hoops. Like this 9“ by 15“ snare I am currently practicing my brush technique on, for instance. It used to be a Tama Rockstar rack tom, but it was in no good condition, the bracket was broken and some screws or lugs weren‘t functional anymore. So I took the old hardware off, sanded the shell and put on a nice walnut veneer. Then I brought it to a professional drum builder in Zurich with some old pdp lugs I had left from another project and he finished the job for me (I didn‘t really feel comfortable making a snare bed…). I like the result very much. It is a bit massive, but it sounds quite decent and it‘s my personal custom snare drum. Once I’ve put on a head that is more suitable for brush work, I should be able to get a great tone out of it. Anyway, thanks a lot to Anthony for initiating this community and I am looking forward to seeing it grow and get news and inputs from you guys. Cheers!
Exciting stuff
Hey folks. Wanted to share something I’m super excited about. I recently got my hands on a stash of hardwood lumber, mostly oak, that my grandfather milled from trees he cut down on his farm over 20 years ago. I partnered with Buck County Drum Company, and they are going to build me a custom kit from this wood. I just made payment yesterday, and I’ll deliver the material to them in the next few weeks. I’ll have to sell off some gear to cover the cost, but I know it will be worth it. I’ll post progress here over the next few months. Here is the “before” picture of my new drums.

Great stuff! It's going to be stave shells then, I suppose? You've got plenty of wood there, that should be enough lumber for a nice drum set. Have you settled on drum sizes yet, or do you have any particular ideas?

@Eric Kenlin Well, I'm looking forward to seeing the results 😊 Thanks for sharing!
