Hermes + Claude — subscription vs API question
Hey all — quick one. My Hermes suddenly started throwing HTTP 400: You're out of extra usage, even though my Claude Code CLI in the terminal kept working fine on the same subscription. Spent a while digging — checked the auth, redid the login, confirmed Hermes was on my subscription and not an API key. Still got the error. From what I could tell, it looks like third-party apps like Hermes no longer draw from the subscription plan and instead get billed to "extra usage" (pay-as-you-go) credits — is that what you're all seeing now too? For now, I turned auto-reload on for extra-usage credits, and it's working again. How's everyone else set up — extra-usage credits, an API key, or a different provider? Trying to land on something cost-predictable.

What I've found is that if you use Claude as your model for Hermes, it will always use the usage credits vs. the usage that is included in your plan. There doesn't seem to be a way around this. If Claude Code is setup with OAuth, it will use the usage built into the plan. You can give Hermes instructions to always route heavy work to Claude Code by default to minimize the usage credits getting burned. To not burn usage credits, you can connect Hermes to a different model that's less expensive and just use Claude Code for coding.
