Five French Sound Endings — elle, ette, ien(ne), tion, eur
Salut! Today you're learning five common endings that show up everywhere in French — once you recognize them, you'll read and pronounce so much more naturally. Video below Le son ELLE — like "el" in "anel" elle → tourterelle, ficelle, chandelle, semelle, coccinelle, échelle, violoncelle Le son ETTE — like "et" in "net" ette → mouette, crevette, couette, camionnette, serviette, voiturette, clarinette, assiette, bicyclette, casquette Le son IEN / IENNE — like "yen" ien → chien, italien, martien, dalmatien ienne → chienne, italienne, martienne, dalmatienne (feminine forms) Le son TION — like "syon" tion → récréation, attention, diction, collation, éducation, respiration Le son EUR — like "ur" in "fur" eur → fleur, ordinateur, tracteur, facteur, beurre, peur Notice how ien and ienne work as masculine and feminine pairs — the same pattern applies to nationalities, adjectives, and more! Salut! Today you're learning venir — one of those essential verbs that comes up constantly in everyday French. Video below Venir — To come Je viens — I come Tu viens — You come Il vient — He comes Elle vient — She comes On vient — We come (casual spoken French) Nous venons — We come Vous venez — You come (formal / plural) Ils viennent — They come (masculine) Elles viennent — They come (feminine) Notice how the stem changes quite a bit across the forms — viens, vient, venons, venez, viennent.
