Newbie Gardener's first day in the Garden
I want to preface this by saying I've never gardened before. Like never. I've had plants in containers in the house, but getting out and feeling the soil? Never happened. So today was a new experience for me. I rented a plot in the city's Community Garden, thinking I'd have all this expertise around me. Wrong. I was there alone. But it was nice. Just me and nature. And weeds. I wasn't surprised cause its been raining a lot. I'd brought my garden tool set that I'd bought online with me so I set out to tackle the weeds. First thing I learned was there's a ton of different weeds and they all seem to uproot differently. Two hours into it, I got half my plot done before I started getting dizzy and seeing spots. During this time, I learned not to sit down because the ants tried to eat me alive, that I should have worn a hat and also brought water. Oops! I had to leave. Since I bought starter herbs today I'll definitely have to go back to finish planting tomorrow. With all this as background, any tips for the newbie?

Great job getting this started! Th e thing to know about gardening is it’s a long term relationship and you will learn as you go. Just a little bit a day goes a long way and before you know it, you’ll be weed free and harvesting. Herbs are a wonderful start! Are you going to try maybe a tomato plant too? Cherry tomato plants yield quite a bit, so it would be fun for a beginning stage.
Bugs
What do you use besides pesticides for killing bugs too keep the pollinators alive

Neem oil. If I see things like caterpillars I like to pick them off by hand the best I can. This year I might go out with a dust buster for the leaf footed beetles. That seems like it would be so satisfying until it’s time to empty the canister.

Everyone has a green thumb, you just have to learn how to use it!
