🌿 INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT: Wildlife Conservation Internship with RAREC — Amazon Rainforest, Peru!
Calling all pre-vet students with a passion for wildlife and exotic species! 🦜🦥 This one is SPECIAL. RAREC (Rainforest Awareness, Rescue & Education Center) offers a hands-on Wildlife Conservation Internship in the heart of the Amazon — based out of Iquitos, Peru. If you’ve been dreaming of real field experience with exotic and wild animals, this could be your next step! What You’ll Actually Be Doing: Wildlife rescue & rehabilitation support, animal enrichment activities, species behavioral monitoring, camera trap setup & footage review, foraging for natural food sources, enclosure maintenance & improvement, AND environmental education with local children. This isn’t busy work — this is real conservation medicine in action. ✅ Who Qualifies: Students or professionals in Animal Sciences, Animal Care & Husbandry, Wildlife Conservation, or related fields — yes, that includes pre-vet! You must be 18+, have rabies and tetanus vaccinations, and carry valid medical insurance. Spanish knowledge is a bonus! 🇵🇪 📦 What’s Included: ✔️ Airport pickup/drop-off (Iquitos) ✔️ Shared A/C accommodations ✔️ All meals (special dietary needs accommodated — just confirm beforehand! 🌱) ✔️ Program transportation ✔️ Amazon River boat ride to see pink river dolphins 🐬 ✔️ Wi-Fi, laundry access & recreation area ✔️ Additional tours based on length of stay 📋 Program Details: Internships begin on Mondays with a minimum 2-week commitment. Each intern completes a personal project of their choosing — hello, CV builder! 🙌 International flights and visas are your responsibility. 📝 To Apply: Submit your CV + a motivational letter through RAREC’s website at rarec.org 💡My Take: This type of experience is GOLD on a veterinary school application. Hands-on exotic and wildlife exposure is something most pre-vet students struggle to find — and this puts you in the Amazon working with real rescued animals. If you can make the timing and budget work, this is absolutely worth exploring!

🐑 Case Study: Why Is Clover Falling Behind the Flock?
Meet Clover, a 3-year-old Dorper ewe on a Virginia farm. Her owner notices she keeps stopping during the morning move to the pasture while the rest of the flock walks on without her. She is not limping. She is not coughing. She just cannot keep up. The owner assumes she is getting old before her time. You arrive and listen to her heart. There it is: a loud systolic murmur over the left apex. Her gums are pink but her legs are puffy below the hocks. Jugular veins bulge when she lowers her head. This is not a respiratory problem. This is her heart failing. You ask about her recent history. Three months ago she had a dental abscess that was treated but incompletely resolved. That chronic oral infection was likely the source of bacteria that seeded her bloodstream and colonized her mitral valve, creating a growing mass of bacteria and fibrin called a vegetation. This is bacterial endocarditis caused almost certainly by Trueperella pyogenes, the most common culprit in small ruminants. Echocardiography confirms it. The prognosis is guarded. Treatment requires weeks of high-dose penicillin. 💡 The takeaway: In small ruminants, a chronic infection anywhere in the body is a potential future cardiac emergency. When I was a Junior in High School, I had planned to attend art school because art is one of my greatest passions. However, during the summer before my Senior year started, I got 2 kittens and a turtle, who taught me and showed me what real love truly is. A few months after, my boyfriend passed away, and I felt so alone and just wanted to disappear forever and forget everything that had happened. And that same night, my cats laid beside me in my bed as I cried and after that day, I just started to develop my love for animals more and more because my cats and turtle taught me that even though my boyfriend is no longer here physically, I know he's warmth and love remains through my pets. And I just want animals to feel the same towards humans, towards us, towards me. I just never thought I would want to become a veterinarian especially with how competitive the field is! But here I am, this career is something that has inspired me and showed me that when you think youre alone, you are not, because I have learned that animals are a man's best friend and I just feel that through this career I will be able to make a difference in this world, just like my late boyfriend would have if he was still here.
