Ever feel like your mix is crowded, but you don’t want to throw anything out? Here’s a trick I use all the time: pan based on frequency, not just left or right. 🔧 How to Do It: - High-frequency elements (vocals, hi-hats, cymbals, lead synths) → pan slightly left or right. - Low-frequency elements (kick, bass, sub synths) → keep them centered or pan subtly opposite your highs. - Mids → play with placement depending on importance, but keep them mostly near centre for focus. 🎚 Why This Works: - Your mix breathes naturally — highs float, lows stay tight. - Clarity is king — low-end isn’t fighting for space with highs or mids. - Stereo field feels alive — small movements make your mix feel wider without losing focus. 🧪 Quick Experiment: 1. Pick a track with multiple layers. 2. Subtly pan highs left, lows right (or vice versa). 3. Toggle mono/stereo — notice how the centre stays solid while the sides create space. 4. I’ve been in this career for over 15 years now, and let me tell you — there are good seasons, and there are “why am I doing this?” seasons. If you’ve consciously chosen music production as your career, congrats! You’ve also accidentally signed up for a life of solitude and becoming a professional door-builder and door-opener. You must innovate. You must not sit around waiting for someone to hand you a map. Expect more L’s than W’s, and remember: real results take real time. Most importantly, believe in yourself. Seriously. If you sit around waiting for the industry’s approval, you’ll end up stuck in the world’s longest waiting room with no snacks. Don’t do that to yourself. At the core of building a sustainable career, you have to keep coming back to your original “why.” Reconnect with it. Nurture it. Throw some gasoline on that passion-fire when it gets low. One major hack: Learn to embrace disappointment early on. Don’t let it spiral into emotional self-destruction. This career is a big ol’ experiment of trial and error. What worked for one producer may not work for you — and that’s okay. The unfair advantage you’ll always have? No one else is you. And when you fully own that, there will always be a spot at the top with your name on it. Trust me: there’s a space waiting for you. It all comes down to how bad you want it — and how much time you’re willing to invest. The only thing standing between you and your dreams? You. (And quitting. So, don’t.) Keep the fire lit.
